4 mai à 19h : Rencontre avec CHAHLA CHAFIQ pour la publication de son essai Islam politique, sexe et genre. A la lumière de l’expérience iranienne (PUF). Sujet politique, l’islamisme ne cesse d’interroger notre monde, de renouveler les débats à tous les niveaux de la société et de poser des questions qui dépassent largement le cadre des sociétés dites musulmanes. Toutes ces questions se cristallisent dans les débats passionnés sur le sens du voile, qui interrogent à leur tour les rapports entre l’islam, le politique, le sexe et le genre. Ils rejoignent aussi les vives interrogations de notre époque sur le retour du religieux dans la politique. Cet essai s’empare de ces questions à partir de l’expérience de l’Iran où l’islamisme révolutionnaire a conquis le pouvoir et y développe son projet sociopolitique depuis plus de 30 ans. Docteure en sociologie et écrivaine, Chahla Chafiq a notamment publié un recueil de nouvelles Chemins et brouillard, et des essais Le nouvel homme islamiste et Femmes sous le voile face à la loi islamique. 4 May 19h30 Evenings with an author at the American Library of Paris presents: Joe Ashby Porter. Joe Ashby Porter is a professor at Duke and he has written academic works such as Shakespeare's Mercutio and The Drama of Speech Acts under his name Joseph A. Porter. He also writes literary fiction, including novels Eelgrass, Resident Aliens, and The Near Future, and the collections The Kentucky Stories, Lithuania: Short Stories, Touch Wood: Short Stories, and All Aboard: Stories. 5-8 May Paris en Toutes Lettres, a literary festival with the theme La ville est un roman, the city is a novel. In different venues across Paris including cultural centres such as the 104 and Point Ephemere, See authors such as Jim Harrison and Jay McInerney, Adam Thirlwell, Veronique Ovaldé and Atiq Rahimi (and find out what they have planned for the passage du désir). 5 May at 7pm The Village Voice Bookshop and Les Editions Albin Michel are proud to invite you to meet the American novelist, Vendela Vida who will read from and discuss her book, The Lovers. The Lovers concerns itself with paradoxes of intimacy: isolation within a closely tied family and the unexpected affection between strangers from different cultures. Twenty-six years after her honeymoon in Datça, Turkey, recently widowed Yvonne returns to the Turkish peninsula not to relive the early happy days of her marriage but to remember them. Instead, she finds herself haunted by the many struggles she and her husband faced, above all the wedge driven between them by the antics of their alcoholic daughter, Aurelia. As Yvonne explores the town and its surrounding beaches, she starts to settle into her new identity as a widow and finds herself under a microscope as an American tourist traveling alone. A fast friendship with a young Turkish boy eases Yvonne's loneliness, but it also sparks the disapproval of several locals, leading to a climactic conversation and a quiet epiphany. An American novelist, journalist and editor, Vendela Vida is the author of three previous books; Girls on the Verge, And Now You Can Go and Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name. She is also co-founder and co-editor of the literary magazine, The Believer, and collaborated with Dave Eggers on the screenplay of the 2009 Sam Mendes film, Away We Go. * 9 May 7pm La nuit de Walpurgis dans la musique et la littérature Pierre Flinois et Lucie Bataille: Dans le cadre de la 10e édition du Festival 1,2,3... cultures d'Europe « L'Europe vaut bien une fête » (9-14 mai 2011), conférence de Pierre Flinois, historien de l'art, critique musical et conférencier. Célébrée dans toute l'Europe depuis des temps fort reculés, la nuit de Walpurgis symbolise l'avènement du printemps, mais est également identifiée au sabbat des sorcières. Imprégnée de légendes, elle donne lieu à toutes sortes de rites festifs ou occultes, et éveille l'imagination. Il n'est donc pas étonnant que nombre de musiciens et écrivains se soient emparés de ce thème. Pierre Flinois raconte la nuit de Walpurgis dans les oeuvres musicales classiques et contemporaines. 9 May 7:00PM POETRY READING AT THE RED WHEELBARROW: Paris-based poets Amy Hollowell and Pansy Maurer-Alvarez are joined by Robert Hershon, poet and publisher from Brooklyn. Bios: Amy Hollowell is the author of Peneloping: Episodes in the Day of She andGiacomettrics and is a contributor to numerous publications in Europe and the United States. She has been named one of the leading English-language poets in France by The Café Review and Ekleksopgrahia. Forthcoming next year is a bilingual collection of her work, translated into French by Célin Vuraler and excerpted in the chapbook Ultrasound/Ultrason. A former editor of the Paris-based review Pharos, she is also a journalist, translator and Zen Buddhist teacher and founder of the Wild Flower Zen groups in France and Portugal. Her current writing projects include a series of poems addressing the notion of "presence" in the 21st-century "electronic age" and a Buddhist reading of James Joyce's Ulysses. She lives in Montreuil and blogs at zenscribe.ovh.org. Pansy Maurer-Alvarez was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in Pennsylvania and has lived in Europe since 1973. She completed 11 years of literary studies at universities in the US, Spain and later in Switzerland, where she worked for a time as a teacher and translator before turning to writing full time after moving to Paris some 20 years ago. Her poetry has appeared in numerous publications in Austria, France, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US and some of her poems have been translated into French, German and Spanish. She has contributed to several anthologies in Spain and the US. Her collections are: Dolores: The Alpine Years (1996) and When the Body says It’s Leaving (2004) both from Hanging Loose Press, Brooklyn; and Lovers Eternally Nearing (1997) a limited edition, fine press collaboration with the Swiss artist Walther Ehrismann, with German translations by Rudolf Bähler (Editions Thomas Howeg, Zurich). She is a Contributing Editor for the British magazine Tears in the Fence. Robert Hershon was born and raised in Brooklyn. Once a copy boy for the Herald Tribune, he majored in journalism at New York University and wrote stories on the side, later turning to poetry while living in San Francisco. Back in New York, he became one of the founding editors of Hanging Loose magazine (1966). He is the author of 12 poetry collections, most recently Into the Punch Line: Poems 1984-1994 (1994), The German Lunatic (2000), and Calls from the Outside World (2006). His work has appeared in American Poetry Review, Poetry Northwest, the World, Michigan Quarterly, Ploughshares and The Nation, among many others. He is also the recipient of various awards including 2 NEA fellowships. He has edited several anthologies of High School writing and is a co-editor of Hanging Loose magazine and Hanging Loose Press, Brooklyn. L’agenda d’André Bernard, jeune recrue d’une banque new-yorkaise, n’a jamais été aussi chargé. Nathan Williams, l’un de ses supérieurs, lui fait des avances et les deux hommes s’engagent dans une relation torride. Mais Nathan est marié avec Sybil et il décide de la présenter à son amant sur qui Sybil, à son tour, jette son dévolu. Avec impertinence, Abha Dawesar ausculte les affres de l’amour et du désir en transgressant les conventions et les idées reçues. 11 mai à 19h : Rencontre avec MARIE-JO BONNET pour la publication de son essai Violette Morris. Histoire d’une scandaleuse (Perrin). Née en 1893 Violette Morris s’est d’abord illustrée comme estafette pendant la guerre de 14-18, puis comme sportive de haut niveau, particulièrement dans la course automobile. En 1930, la Fédération féminine sportive la condamne pour “mauvais exemple aux jeunes filles”. Marginalisée, V. Morris s’installe alors sur une péniche avec sa compagne et fréquente des artistes, donc Cocteau ; elle se fait couper les seins. Mais c’est surtout sur la période de la Seconde Guerre mondiale que s’attarde l’historienne Marie-Jo Bonnet : V. Morris a été collaborationiste sous l’Occupation allemande sans nul doute, mais a-t-elle été un agent actif de la Gestapo ? Quelles sont les circonstances exactes de sa mort sous les balles de la résistance normande en 1944. Marie-Jo Bonnet rouvre le dossier en enquêtant avec minutie dans les archives des services secrets de la France libre, de la police, des procès et auprès de témoins. Et si Violette Morris incarnait tous les démons refoulés d’une époque ? Marie-Jo Bonnet a entre autres publié Les relations amoureuses entre les femmes du XVIè au XXè siècle, Les femmes artistes dans les avant-gardes et Qu’est-ce qu’une femme désire quand elle désire une femme ? Friends and writers will evoke the life and the work of this exceptional woman who devoted her life to writing the lives of exceptional women and men: the Australian author Christina Stead, the African-American writer Richard Wright, the French philosophers Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s remarkable political lives and personal commitments. Hazel Rowley is the author of four books; Christina Stead: A Biography, Richard Wright: The Life and Times, Tête-à-Tête: The Tumultuous Lives and Loves of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, and Franklin and Eleanor: An Extraordinary Marriage. *12 May 11, 19.30 The Festival des cultures d’Europe presents Paul Murray at the Centre Culturel Irlandais. Admission free, reservation recommended, in English. Skippy Dies is Paul Murray’s second novel. At Seabrook College Skippy and his classmates share the same dreams and disappointments as all Irish adolescents who lived through the era of the Celtic Tiger. As the traditional Hallowe’en ball approaches, they anticipate at last meeting the girls from St Brigid’s. This outstanding novel was short-listed for both the Man Booker Prize and the Costa Novel Award in 2010. The Paris-based cultural institutions celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Festival des cultures d’Europe 9-14 May. * 18 mai à 19h : Hommage à SUSAN SONTAG, romancière et essayiste, en présence de DOMINIQUE BOURGOIS, éditrice de son œuvre. Lecture par la comédienne NATHALIE RICHARD. Née en 1933 à New York, Susan Sontag est décédée en 2004. Elle publie son premier roman en 1963 Le Bienfaiteur puis Dernier recours, Moi, etcetera, l’Amant du volcan, En Amérique (adapté au cinéma). A partir des années 60 elle publie de nombreux articles pour différentes revues de la gauche intellectuelle américaine réunis dans plusieurs recueils dont l’Œuvre parle et Temps forts. Elle s’engage dans les combats de l’époque, le féminisme, la lutte contre la guerre du Viet Nam et plus tard contre la guerre en Irak. Son œuvre d’essayiste l’a rendue célèbre avec notamment Sur la photographie (1973). Francophile, elle fut proche de nombreux intellectuels dont Roland Barthes auquel elle consacra un essai. De sa propre expérience du cancer contre lequel elle se battra pendant trente ans elle écrira De la maladie comme métaphore, puis d’autres essais sur la maladie et la mort Le sida et ses métaphores et Devant la douleur des autres. Elle réalisa des films et mis en scène plusieurs pièces de théâtre. A la fin des années 80, elle rencontra la photographe Annie Leibovitz dont elle fut la compagne jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. En compagnie de Dominique Bourgois, son amie qui réédite son œuvre en France et a entamé la publication de son journal (1er tome : Renaître), cette soirée permettra de (re)découvrir une femme remarquable, engagée, figure de la gauche américaine. Il fait l’inventaire du monde imaginaire des lesbiennes et réécrit l’Histoire de l’âge d’or à l’âge de gloire, de l’âge de fer à celui de bronze ou de béton. Un univers déroutant et jubilatoire, une humanité qui ne s’accorde qu’au féminin – tant et si bien qu’elle abolit le genre. Allusions mythologiques et pastiches littéraires, vraies et fausses citations, jeux polysémiques et paradoxes, fables et blasons, ethnographies, poèmes en prose et scènes prosaïques, composent ainsi au gré des entrées alphabétiques une œuvre totale, inclassable, une utopie politique et sociale où mots et réalités recréés échappent à l’inertie : Wittig et Zeig font du dictionnaire le lieu de l’invention par excellence. ALBERT MOBILIO est maître de conférences au département d’études littéraires de la New School (Eugene Lang College). Il est co-rédacteur en chef de la revue Bookforum. Il a publié plusieurs livres de poésie dont Bendable Siege, The Geographics, Me with Animal Towering, Letters from Mayhem et, récemment, Touch Wood (The Brooklyn Rail / Black Square Editions). Ses textes ont aussi paru dans Harper’s, the Village Voice, Grand Street, Black Clock, Bomb, Cabinet, Talisman et Tin House. Pour sa carrière de critique littéraire, il a reçu les prix Whiting Writers’ Award et the National Book Critics Circle Award.FABIENNE RAPHOZ est née en 1961 en Haute-Savoie. Elle dirige depuis 1996, avec Bertrand Fillaudeau, les éditions José Corti.
Elle a accueilli de nouveaux poètes et romanciers contemporains, développé la « Série américaine » et créé le site web de la maison. Passionnée par le conte populaire de tradition orale, elle crée en 1998, la Collection Merveilleux qui accueille des collectes du monde entier, ainsi que des textes classiques ou contemporains qui illustrent le genre au sens large. Cette collection compte une quarantaine de titres à ce jour. Dans le cadre de ses recherches universitaires, elle a publié un essai aux éditions Métropolis, Genève, en 1995 : Les Femmes de Barbe-Bleue, une histoire de curieuses et édité une anthologie commentée : Des Belles et des Bêtes, Corti, 2003.
Ornithologue amateur, elle a publié une anthologie commentée où se croisent l'oiseau et le conte populaire : L'Aile bleue des contes, l'oiseau, Corti, 2009, (illustrée de 70 dessins des oiseaux cités par Ianna Andréadis). Dans le domaine de la création littéraire, elle a notamment publié deux recueils poétiques parus aux éditions Héros-Limite (Huit poèmes, Pendant 1-62, ainsi que La Poussière du ciel, un hommage aux derniers ardoisiers des Monts d'Arrée (Photographies d'Alain Kerrien, Filigranes, 1997.) Our three-person editorial staff is eclectic, to say the least, so our tastes run wide and deep. For your best chance at being pulled from the pile and printed on our pages, choose examples of your work that are sharp, tight, as strong as whiskey, darkly visionary, caustically witty, perhaps even tormented to the point of being tormenting; but above all, they should be moving and unclichéd. Submit as many as three unpublished poems of up to 60 lines per, flash fiction up to 600 words, and short stories, novel excerpts and serialized stories up to 3,000 words long. Please also include a short bio. If it exceeds 50 words, you'll have to edit it down if/when we select your work for publication.
