Part I) Paris Events and READINGS by date

3 September 19h30 Granta’s John Freeman presents House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family and a Lost Middle East by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anthony Shadid, who passed away last year. John will be in discussion with one of France’s most acclaimed writers, Amin Maalouf; Shadid's colleague from the Washington Post, Ed Cody; filmmaker Katia Jarjoura (and friend of Shadid’s) and Jihane Chouaib, the director of the documentary Dream Country. House of Stone ‘. . . offers a powerful reminder of the impact that never-ending insecurity has on people long after the violence that ruined their lives has been forgotten by the rest of the world.’ New York Times. In spring 2011, Anthony Shadid was one of four New York Times reporters captured in Libya, cuffed and beaten, as that country was seized by revolution. When he was freed, he went home. Not to Boston or Beirut where he lives or to Oklahoma City, where his Lebanese-American family had settled. Instead, he returned to his great-grandfather's estate in Lebanon, a house that, over three years earlier, Shadid had begun to rebuild. House of Stone is the story of a battle-scarred home and a war correspondent's jostled spirit, and of how reconstructing the one came to fortify the other. Shadid creates a mosaic of past and present, tracing the house's renewal alongside his family's flight from Lebanon and resettlement in America. He memorializes a lost world and provides profound insights into this volatile landscape. House of Stone is an unforgettable meditation on war, exile, rebirth and the universal yearning for home. Anthony Shadid was a foreign correspondent for the New York Times and former Baghdad bureau chief of the Washington Post. Over a fifteen-year career, he reported from most countries in the Middle East. He won his first Pulitzer Prize in 2004 in International Reporting for his coverage of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the occupation which followed. He won a second in 2010 for his coverage of Iraq as the United States began its withdrawal. Shadid is the author of two previous books, Legacy of the Prophet: Despots, Democrats and the New Politics of Islam (2001), and Night Draws Near: Iraq's People in the Shadow of America's War (2005), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in the US. Shadid died of an asthma attack while attempting to leave Syria on horseback on 16 February 2012. AT: Shakespeare & Co., 37rue de la Bûcherie, Paris 5ème. M° St Michel

5 September 16h Come for a *brief signing* (4pm-420pm) with Ron Rash, award-winning poet, short-story writer and novelist. Ron's most recent story collection, Burning Bright, won the 2010 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award and his novel, Serena, was a New York Times bestseller and the movie based on this will premiere in Cannes next May. His latest novel, The Cove, is a gloriously dark work of historical fiction set in the Appalachian mountains (Irving Welsh has just written the screenplay). [Ron Rash] ‘appears to derive quiet, almost religious, pleasure in descriptive clarity, so that sentences become little paradigms of the events they describe . . . because of its simplicity, the hard won elegance of its telling, it stays singularly in the mind after it has finished’ - Tim Adams, The Observer. AT: Shakespeare & Co., 37rue de la Bûcherie, Paris 5ème. M° St Michel

10 September 19h Noel Riley Fitch, Rick Tulka and John Baxter will discuss the Paris café and its central role in art and literature. Why is the Paris café central to artistic history? How is the café portrayed in art and literature? What has the café offered the artist? What historical events have occurred in cafés? Why are its numbers diminishing and what future can we foresee? Three distinguished panel members will discuss these and other questions: Rick Tulka, who has drawn the clientele and staff at the café Le Select almost every afternoon for over 17 years; Noel Riley Fitch, author of three books on the history of cafes, including one with Rick Tulka (Paris Café: the Select Crowd); and John Baxter, author of The Most Beautiful Walk in the World: A Pedestrian in Paris. 10 September 19h Lecture: Vladimir Vertlib, Histoires d'enfance. AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116 Paris Métro: Iéna

AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116 Paris Métro: Iéna

13 September 19h Joanna Biggar will present and sign her book That Paris Year. Paris, 1962. A story of blessing and betrayal, of love and politics, and - above all - friendship, as five young American women travel to the City of Light for their junior year abroad at the legendary Sorbonne. They expect adventure, perhaps even romance. What they find is an old and complex world aflame with new ideas! Through the revolutionary ideas of Andre Malraux, the feminist theory of Simone de Beauvoir, the sensuality of Colette, and the existential angst of Camus and Sartre, these young women learn that seduction can be as intellectual as it is sexual. To RSVP, please send an email with your complete contact information to books(at)whsmith(dot)fr with 'Joanna Biggar Event RSVP' as the message's subject. You will NOT receive a confirmation, but your name will be added to our guest list. AT: WH Smith 248 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris. Métro: Concorde

14 September - 26 October William Butler Yeats, son œuvre, sa famille.  Vernissage 13 Septemberfrom 19.00 admission free. The exhibition will be open to the public for the Journées européennes du patrimoine on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September (14.00-17.00) and for the Nuit Blanche on Saturday 6 October (19.00-2.00) - admission free. Exhibition closed 4-5 and 11 to 14 October. William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He created works that are universally known and loved, and that have exerted a profound influence on world literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923. This exhibition addresses the life and work of Yeats and also focuses on other family members. It gives an insight into the social, cultural and political evolution of Ireland from the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the Second World War, a time of great change and artistic excitement. Panels in French, audio-recordings of poetry readings together with original documents and works such as Louis le Brocquy’s lithograph depicting Yeats’ head combine to present this world-renowned poet who is perhaps less well-known in France than his compatriots Beckett and Joyce. This exhibition is organised in collaboration with the National Library of Ireland, The Model Sligo & the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin. AT: Centre Culturel Irlandais, 5 rue des Irlandais, 75005 Paris. RER: Luxembourg

18 September 19h30 The Poetry Hour: Homage to Josephine Hart. Sinéad Cusack, Marianne Faithfull, Bob Geldof and Charlotte Rampling read William Butler Yeats. Admission free (in the courtyard) - seating can not be guaranteed - reservation recommended in English. An open air event. Josephine Hart was an Irish writer with an ardent love of poetry. To the packed-out audiences who flocked in recent years to the Josephine Hart Poetry Hour at the British Library in London, she would explain that "poetry, this trinity of sound, sense and sensibility, gives voice to experience in a way that no other literary art form can". She also wrote that "Yeats learned early that art is what matters". His passion, expressed in his poetry, continues to illuminate our lives and inform our imaginations in the 21st century. Josephine Hart died in 2011 and star readers Sinéad Cusack, Marianne Faithfull, Bob Geldof, Charlotte Rampling pay tribute to her this evening in Paris. This special occasion will be presented by poet and broadcaster Vincent Woods. AT: Centre Culturel Irlandais, 5 rue des Irlandais, 75005 Paris. RER: Luxembourg

During World War II, in the French village inhabited by Steiner's series detective Louis Morgon, some people collaborated while others resisted. Decades later, Louis Morgon finds evidence hidden under the floor of his house of a long-ago massacre of the town's resisters. He inadvertently unleashes a firestorm of danger, deception and murder. About the author: Peter Steiner earned his living first as a professor of German and then as a cartoonist for The New Yorker. He wrote his first novel when he was nearly sixty.  His novels take place in the Loire Valley where he spends part of each year. The Resistance is his fourth.

21 September 18h The September edition of Philosophers in the Library will centre on the roots, troubles and redemption of American democracy. Led by Lex Paulson – a veteran of the Obama campaign and author of the "Applied Classics" series, who’s currently pursuing a philosophy PhD at the Sorbonne–the talk will explore the subject with the help of two illuminating texts, Polybius's Histories and Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. A Greek captive in 2nd-century BC Rome, Polybius wrote the seminal account of how Rome's balanced constitution accelerated her conquest of the known world; Rome's republican system, in turn, was the primary influence upon America's founding generation as its new republic was born. De Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat sent to study American prisons in the 1830's, produced instead the most insightful, readable, and enduring account ever written on America and its civic life. What light do these ancient texts shed on the campaign of 2012? Can American democracy, for all its dysfunction, still be saved? AT: Shakespeare & Co., 37rue de la Bûcherie, Paris 5ème. M° St Michel

AT: Maison de l'Amérique latine, 217 Boulevard Saint-Germain  75007 Paris. Métro: Solférino

We’re looking for poetry that engages with or is written by animals, beasts, monsters, immigrants, creatures, aliens, cyborgs, queers such that it challenges western, enlightenment figurations of the “self” and “human.”  Any contemporary work in English (domestic or translated) that addresses the post-human is welcome.
