August, 1968: Babo Patel arrives in London from Madras, with curly hair and dreams of becoming a success. When he meets the beautiful, auburn-haired Siân Jones, he falls in love instantly. She, like him, is in search of something bigger than what the home she left behind can offer. When Babo’s parents learn of his intention to marry ‘some girl from God knows where’ he is given an ultimatum; the two lovers may marry only if they live in Madras for two years before returning to London. As the years pass by, the calamities and heartaches of first love, lost innocence, and old age unfold across cultures and generations of this mixed-up family in a topsy-turvy world. Tishani Doshi is a novelist, poet, journalist and dancer based in former Madras, now Chennai, in India. Her first collection of poetry, Countries of the Body, won the Forward Poetry Prize for best first collection in 2006. Carras’ past include years studying classical music in France, then as a Student of the American School of Modern Music, where he worked under Peter Giron & Jeff Gardner. Carras had a jazz fusion -Womba- group before working with a techno –Kmist group recording at Comet Records (Manu Boubli / Eric Trosset). From there, he moved into concrete music. Bennett says,“. His (Carras’) work has always impressed me for its originality and for the purity with which he carries out his ideas and approaches. At first glance, his work seems extremely minimal.….[but] There is a real life, both a very specific one and a very universal one, inhering in them…” One reads or watches his works, “again and again, each time acquiring more and more resonance and meaning.” Carras’ text "dans l'herbe fraîche" will appear in revue N° 7 of « Ici Là » in June. 25 June 7:00pm Shakespeare and Co. is honoured to present the Editor of The New York Review of Books, Robert Silvers who will be interviewed by journalist and writer Mark Gevisser about his illustrious history at The New York Review of Books. About The New York Review of Books: With a worldwide circulation of over 135,000, The New York Review of Books has established itself, in Esquire's words, as “the premier literary-intellectual magazine in the English language.” The New York Review began during the New York publishing strike of 1963, when its founding editors, Robert Silvers and Barbara Epstein, and their friends, decided to create a new kind of magazine—one in which the most interesting and qualified minds of our time would discuss current books and issues in depth. Just as importantly, it was determined that the Review should be an independent publication; it began life as an independent editorial voice and it remains independent today. See more at http://www.nybooks.com/about/ Robert B. Silvers is editor of The New York Review of Books. Prior to joining the Review, Mr. Silvers was, from 1959 to 1963, associate editor of Harper’s magazine, editor of the book Writing in America and translator of La Gangrene. Before that, Mr. Silvers lived in Paris for six years (1952 to 1958), where he served with the U.S. Army and attended the Sorbonne and École des Sciences Politiques. He joined the editorial board of The Paris Review in 1954 and became Paris editor in 1956. He also worked as press secretary to Governor Chester Bowles in 1950. AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116 Paris Métro: Iéna

11 July 7.30pm In collaboration with New York University, Lorin Stein will discuss The Paris Review. Lorin Stein is a critic, editor and translator and the third editor of The Paris Review since succeeding Philip Gourevitch in 2010. He worked as an editor at FSG who also published his translation of The Mystery Guest by Gregoire Bouillier and has also translated Tristan Garcia's Hate: A Love Story from the French. Books edited by Stein have received the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and his translations from French have appeared in The New York Review of Books, Harper's and more. Founded in Paris by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen, and George Plimpton in 1953, The Paris Review began with a simple editorial mission: "Dear reader," William Styron wrote in a letter in the inaugural issue, "The Paris Review hopes to emphasize creative work-fiction and poetry-not to the exclusion of criticism, but with the aim in mind of merely removing criticism from the dominating place it holds in most literary magazines and putting it pretty much where it belongs, i.e., somewhere near the back of the book. I think The Paris Review should welcome these people into its pages: the good writers and good poets, the non-drumbeaters and non-axe-grinders. So long as they're good." Decade after decade, the Review has introduced the important writers of the day. Adrienne Rich was first published in its pages, as were Philip Roth, V. S. Naipaul, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Mona Simpson, Edward P. Jones, and Rick Moody. Selections from Samuel Beckett's novel Molloy appeared in the fifth issue, one of his first publications in English. The magazine was also among the first to recognize the work of Jack Kerouac, with the publication of his short story, 'The Mexican Girl', in 1955. Other milestones of contemporary literature, now widely anthologized, also first made their appearance in The Paris Review: Italo Calvino's Last Comes the Raven, Philip Roth's Goodbye Columbus, Donald Barthelme's Alice, Jim Carroll's Basketball Diaries, Peter Matthiessen's Far Tortuga, Jeffrey Eugenides's Virgin Suicides, and Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections. 25 July 6pm Come and join us to celebrate a new anthology of poetry and fiction about Paris, Strangers in Paris, which will be launched by editor David Barnes, with readings by various contributors. 'A rich collection of writings … parade the allees, avenues, rues, ruelles, gardens, boardrooms, academic hallways, bedrooms and dining rooms of Paris in all its seasons, to reflect on place and nation, on self, on language and the making of stories and poems, the mind turning round itself in its wanderings.'-Jennifer K Dick
The stunning variety of writing in this volume addresses the city of Paris in all its complexity, while challenging the mythology of expatriate Parisian literature. The anthology contains entries as diverse and disparate as an excerpt from John Berger's novel, Here is Where We Meet; Suzanne Allen's ekphrastic poetry, a tongue-in-cheek take on the nineteenth-century novel by Helen Cusack O'Keeffe; Canadian writer Lisa Pasold's story of a forced extended stay in Paris; and an interview with the celebrated American poet Alice Notley. Strangers in Paris presents anglophone Parisian writing as it is today, without the veneer and expectations of stereotypes, romantic notions, or iconic representations. More than anything, this anthology is a landmark, a notice that begs and entices readers to explore the current English-language authorship developing in and about Paris. CRITICAL & CREATIVE WORKS SOUGHT, including artwork,: for Technoculture: An Online Journal of Technology in Society, Vol. 2 Contact E-mail: kdorwick@tcjournal.org Website: http://tcjournal.org Inquiries: http://tcjournal.org/drupal/inquiries We seek papers from a broad range of academic disciplines that focus on issues that could be briefly summed as “technology and society,” or, perhaps,“technologies and societies.” Successful papers for Technoculture (http://tjcournal.org) should focus on the ways humanists read technology in a range of historical periods and of academic and artistic disciplines as the subject of their work or as a special case of cultural studies. Topics could include depictions of technologies that treat a wide range of subjects related to the humanities. For this second issue, we are especially interested in historical approaches that focus on "dead" or outdated technologies though articles and creative works on any technological subject are appropriate. These subjects might include: • Representations of technology in popular culture including movies and television • Fan reactions and appropriations of science fiction TV series, films and novels• Cultural uses of technology in a variety of cultures (not just the U.S.) • Old technologies and their uses • Ideological approaches to the understanding of a given technology or technologies • Artistic reactions to technology (technology as a subject for the arts) • Use of technology by artists • Social media • War Equipment • Games, game equipment, and gamers • Visions for new technologies (either critical articles that look toward the future or creative works) In particular, we are interested in a conception of “technology” and the “humanist impulse” that pushes beyond contemporary American culture and its fascination with computers; we seek papers that deal with any technology or technologies in any number of historical periods from any relevant theoretical perspective. We will publish art work and media in a variety of media (but designed for display on a computer monitor) including still images, video or audio. Inquiries are welcome at http://tcjournal.org/drupal/inquiries. Calendar Please submit article proposals/abstracts for critical articles (the "journal article") by June 15, 2011. The editorial staff will then request full length drafts from those abstracts still under consideration. Length: For print texts, we seek 6,000 to 7,500 word manuscripts. Creative works in any genre may vary wildly and may be submitted via our web submission form by October 1, 2011. Creative Works Due: October 1, 2011 for immediate review. Calendar for Critical Works: Article Proposals/Abstracts Due: June 15, 2011. Publication: August 15, 2012.

5 May at 7pm The Village Voice Bookshop and Les Editions Albin Michel are proud to invite you to meet the American novelist, Vendela Vida who will read from and discuss her book, The Lovers. The Lovers concerns itself with paradoxes of intimacy: isolation within a closely tied family and the unexpected affection between strangers from different cultures. Twenty-six years after her honeymoon in Datça, Turkey, recently widowed Yvonne returns to the Turkish peninsula not to relive the early happy days of her marriage but to remember them. Instead, she finds herself haunted by the many struggles she and her husband faced, above all the wedge driven between them by the antics of their alcoholic daughter, Aurelia. As Yvonne explores the town and its surrounding beaches, she starts to settle into her new identity as a widow and finds herself under a microscope as an American tourist traveling alone. A fast friendship with a young Turkish boy eases Yvonne's loneliness, but it also sparks the disapproval of several locals, leading to a climactic conversation and a quiet epiphany. An American novelist, journalist and editor, Vendela Vida is the author of three previous books; Girls on the Verge, And Now You Can Go and Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name. She is also co-founder and co-editor of the literary magazine, The Believer, and collaborated with Dave Eggers on the screenplay of the 2009 Sam Mendes film, Away We Go. *10 May 7pm The Village Voice Bookshop and Les Editions de la Table Ronde are proud to invite you to meet the American author, Katherine Mosby, who will read from and discuss her novel, Private Altars. Meet Vienna Daniels, an accomplished New Yorker, who by caprice marries Willard, an irresistible Southern charmer and moves to his West Virginia home during the Depression. Finding rural, small-town life to be sadly provincial, Vienna alienates the local matriarchs and becomes an enigmatic outcast. Nearly bankrupt and unable to tolerate Vienna's nonconformist lifestyle, Willard deserts his family after a violent quarrel with his wife. Shaken but undaunted, Vienna raises their children, falls in love again, and find that life is bountiful until fate slaps her with a series of elegiac events. In Private Altars, Katherine Mosby fuses unforgettable Southern Gothic characters with brilliant prose steeped in lyrical simile. A fine addition to contemporary Southern literature. The novel won the Book of the Month Club Award for Fiction and was a finalist for Barnes and Nobles Discover Great Writers Award. Katherine Mosby’s other publications include The Season of Lillian Dawes, a New York Times Notable Book and Twilight, a nominee for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer. Katherine Mosby has taught Management Communication in the Graduate Business Schools of both Columbia and NYU.

On Monday, May 2nd, David Barnes is teaching two courses: Short Stories II is a continuation of his winter workshop designed to generate and complete short stories and to provide you with readings of published authors as well as personalized feedback on your writing. And new this term is his course on Journals and Letters. This one is for the more timid, beginners, and anyone who's just curious about these mediums and some of the writers who have used and published these very special texts. Consequently the emphasis is fascinatingly personal and you may even find yourself writing down more of your deepest, darkest secrets... for future audiences or just for yourself. Fee: Full Course WY021 - €175.00 (EUR). You must be a member of WICE to attend. Pre-registration required.

Gretel Furner has fashioned her new study, Back to Basics, which will begin May 5th. This course will have less workshop and more general information for those of you who want a break from your own words but not from the study of writing, itself. Brush up on terminology and devices before you set off for the summer to live and hopefully document your thoughts and adventures. Full Course WY051 - €225.00 and you must be a member of WICE to attend. Pre-registration required.

Part III) News reviews & reviews news

SUBMIT NOW: Now open for submissions, issue.ZERO is an upstart literary magazine created as an offshoot of the Anglo writing scene in Paris—a platform for poetry, satire, flash fiction, novel excerpts, and short and serialized stories. Our three-person editorial staff is eclectic, to say the least, so our tastes run wide and deep. For your best chance at being pulled from the pile and printed on our pages, choose examples of your work that are sharp, tight, as strong as whiskey, darkly visionary, caustically witty, perhaps even tormented to the point of being tormenting; but above all, they should be moving and unclichéd. Submit as many as three unpublished poems of up to 60 lines per, flash fiction up to 600 words, and short stories, novel excerpts and serialized stories up to 3,000 words long. Please also include a short bio. If it exceeds 50 words, you'll have to edit it down if/when we select your work for publication. Send all submissions as attachments in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format to TheMag.Paris@gmail.com

The Poets Live podcast posts recordings of our readings, including Jerome Rothenberg, George Vance, Nina Karacosta, Troy Yorke and Rufo Quintavalle. Go to http://poets-live.com/ and click on recordings. If you want to be heard in the podcast applauding some brilliant poets, get yourself along to our next event, noted above.

Corrupt Press (corruptpress.net) is a new Paris-based small poetry press, launching A SHORT CIRCUIT, George Vance's first poetry collection, and Betwixt, a new chapbook by Jennifer K Dick, at Poets Live on May 10th (see Part I above).
