4 & 5 May at 8:30pm. Scottish comedian Phil Kay comes to LAUGHING MATTERS. Organizer Karel Beer writes “this will be Phil's 5th trip to Paris a run that began in late 1997 when I did the very first show at the Hotel du Nord. The place was packed Phil was wild, unpredictable, unruly and quite brilliant. I knew from then on that comedy had found a new home in Paris and a wonderful seven year run at the HdN ensued. this however will be Phil's first visit to la Java and this ex resident of Glasgow will be coming across by ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe and onwards by train. He loves to travel and he travels well even if he can be a messy eater. These days he lives near Brighton which is why his Paris jaunt entails ships and rail. be prepared for nothing being prepared 'cause anything can happen and almost always does when Phil very special Kay comes to town. e.g. when he was here in late 2002 he came he saw and he conkered, he also locked me out of my office at 2 a.m., lost me a mobile phone, had the bike stolen that I rented for him, dropped my guitar several times and had six Time Out staff members ejected from the gig! That's the high priest of brinkmanship... oh and then when he arrived back in England he called to say he'd left his own phone in a shop near the canal...he was back in 2004 for memorable shows in Paris and Milano from where he had every intention of copulating in a gondola in venice during his sojournbut that's another story.maybe he'll tell it to you.” AT: LA JAVA, 105, faubourg du Temple Paris 75010, tickets on the night 20€, includes 2€ two show temp membership card carrying full time member & students 15 € For more info: http://www.anythingmatters.com/email_comedy.htm

*14 May at 7pm. Steve Toltz will give a reading from his first and critically acclaimed novel, “A Fraction of the Whole”. At the heart of this sprawling, dizzying debut are two men: Jasper Dean, a judgmental but forgiving son, and Martin, his brilliant but dysfunctional father. Jasper, in an Australian prison in his early 20s, scribbles out the story of their picaresque adventures, noting cryptically early on that [m]y father's body will never be found. As he tells it, Jasper has been uneasily bonded to his father through thick and thin, which includes Martin's stint managing a squalid strip club during Jasper's adolescence; an Australian outback home literally hidden within impenetrable mazes; Martin's ill-fated scheme to make every Australian a millionaire; and a feverish odyssey through Thailand's menacing jungles. Toltz's exuberant, looping narrative—thick with his characters' outsized longings and with their crazy arguments—sometimes blows past plot entirely, but comic drive and Toltz's far-out imagination carry the epic story, which puts the two (and Martin's own nemesis, his outlaw brother, Terry) on an irreverent roller-coaster ride from obscurity to infamy. Comparisons to Special Topics in Calamity Physics are likely, but this nutty tour de force has a more tender, more worldly spin (PW Review). MEMOIR, BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY Courses with John Baxter: JUNE. With the long-running Paris Writers Workshop taking a sabbatical this year, co-director JOHN BAXTER is offering a series of three-day Master Classes on the writing of memoir, biography and autobiography, beginning in mid-June, with further sessions in August and October. Groups, limited to eight participants, meet in John’s central-Paris apartment, formerly the home of Shakespeare and Company bookshop proprietor Sylvia Beach, and much visited by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Stein etc. Emphasis is on practical advice: getting started on a memoir, planning the structure, finding a voice, and isolating the themes that turn a personal meditation into a book for a larger audience. John will also advise on preparing a manuscript for submission, finding an agent etc. Arrangements can be made to mentor projects following the Master Class. John has published more than 40 books, among them the acclaimed memoirs A POUND OF PAPER; CONFESSIONS OF A BOOK ADDICT, WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS; SEX AND LOVE IN THE CITY OF LIGHT, and IMMOVEABLE FEAST: A PARIS CHRISTMAS. His biographies include WOODY ALLEN, STANLEY KUBRICK, GEORGE LUCAS, STEVEN SPIELBERG and ROBERT DENIRO. Attendance at a Master Classics costs €475, €100 deposit on registration. Participants are not required to have published before, or completed a manuscript, though a sample of writing, not more than 20 pages, will be required before the Class commences.
