12 March 19h Shakespeare and Co. welcomes Caroline Brothers who will be reading from Hinterland, her exquisite, unsettling novel about refugees and what it is to be underage, homeless and invisible in a foreign land . . . Caroline Brothers has worked as a foreign correspondent in Europe and Latin America. She writes for the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times. On Hinterland: It is night, and two boys are crossing a river that is also a border. They have nothing but the clothes on their backs, their inheritance stitched into the lining of a belt, and the courage of an enormous gamble: that Europe will offer them a future they can no longer wait for Afghanistan. Travelling by truck, by boat, by train, by bus and on foot, Aryan and his younger brother Kabir have embarked on an epic journey, clinging to an itinerary they repeat like a mantra so as not to lose their way: Kabul Tehran Istanbul Athens Rome Paris London. There are moments of wonder and adventure but also battles against cold, heat, hunger, violence and exhaustion. Whether they are harvesting half-frozen oranges in Greece, or hiding behind a false wall on a truck to Italy, or sleeping under the rafters of a sawmill in France, the brothers are exploited for their labour, hustled for their money and ignored by almost everyone, except the police. Hinterland is a novel about two children in the aftermath of trauma; underage, homeless and invisible in a foreign land. It shows what happens when the adult world rushes in, and what our universe looks like from the other side of the glass, to those displaced children who are out there, even now, on the road. AT: Shakespeare & Co., 37rue de la Bûcherie, Paris 5ème. M° St Michel

AT: Maison de l'Amérique Latine 217 Boulevard Saint-Germain 75007 Métro: Solférino

AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116 Paris Métro: Iéna

19 March 19h Come and join us to find out all about the love lives of those artists and writers you admire. Tonight we welcome Dan Bullen the author of The Love Lives of the Artists and Lesley McDowell, the author of Between The Sheets, who will be in conversation, discussing these famous literary and artistic liaisons that have captured our imagination. The Love Lives of the Artists tells the stories of Rainer Maria Rilke and Lou Andreas-Salomé, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Diego and Frida, and Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin—five couples who approached their relationships with the same rebellious creativity as they practiced in their art. ‘A captivating exploration’ Kirkus. Between the Sheets: Why did a gifted writer like Sylvia Plath stumble into a marriage that drove her to suicide? Why did Hilda Doolittle want to marry Ezra Pound when she was attracted to women? Why did Simone De Beauvoir pimp for Jean-Paul Satre? Focusing on the diaries, letters, and journals of each woman, Between the Sheets explores nine famous literary liaisons of the twentiety century. 20 - 21 March 20h00 Word for Word performs Sorry Fugu: The American Library is delighted to welcome back the celebrated San Francisco theater company that puts great American short stories on stage - word for word. Returning to Paris for the seventeenth year, Word for Word presents Sorry Fugu, a short story written by satirist T. C. Boyle and directed by John Fisher. Presented with the generous support of The Florence Gould Foundation and The Annenberg Foundation. Albert, a self proclaimed “great culinary artist,” is determined to win over Willa, the hard-nosed food critic, who visits his restaurant. Disaster ensues — until Albert concocts a diabolical plan. T.C. Boyle (“an explosively gifted satirist” — N.Y. Times) writes of food and passion in Sorry Fugu, his witty, wicked look at restaurants and critics. You can find the short story in Boyle's If the River Was Whiskey, available at the Library (call #F B6971). T. C. Boyle is the author of thirteen novels, including World's End (winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award), Drop City (a New York Times bestseller and finalist for the National Book Award), The Women, Talk Talk and When the Killing's Done. 21 March 18h In collaboration with Granta, Shakespeare and Co. welcomes Justin Torres to read from his new novel and one of the most exciting books recently published, ‘an indelible and essential work of art.’ – Paul Harding (Pulitzer-winner). There will also be a short extract read in French. Justin Torres grew up in upstate New York. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, Tin House and other publications. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he is a recipient of the Rolón United States Artist Fellowship in Literature, and is now a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford. We the Animals: Three brothers tear their way through childhood-smashing tomatoes all over each other, building kites from rubbish, hiding when their parents do battle, tiptoeing around the house as their mother sleeps off her graveyard shift. Life in this family is fierce and absorbing, full of chaos and heartbreak and the euphoria of belonging completely to one another. From the intense familial unity felt by a child to the profound alienation he endures as he begins to forge his own way in the world, this beautiful novel reinvents the coming-of-age story in a way that is sly and incredibly powerful. 22 March 19h Arne Bellstorf : Baby's in Black L'histoire vraie d'Astrid Kirchherr & Stuart Sutcliffe. The Village Voice Bookshop has the pleasure of inviting you to meet Rilla Askew who will discuss her three novels and her collection of short stories. Rilla Askew started writing after studying Drama and moving from her native Oklahoma to New York in 1980 to pursue an acting career. Bringing her acting acumen to writing, Rilla’s work displays a mastery of rhythm and an ear for the sounds of language. She is the author of three novels: The Mercy Seat, Fire in Beulah (winner of the American Book Award in 2002), and Harpsong. Among other awards, her work has been nominated for both the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Dublin IMPAC Prize. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes lyric, sometimes funny, always engaging, her fiction like Faulkner’s explores the related tragedies of family and history. As in the work of Cormac McCarthy, Askew shows how an unforgiving landscape resonates in human fate.» - Patricia Eakins Rilla Askew will be introduced by Françoise Palleau-Papin, Professor of American Literature at the University of Paris 13 and author of Ceci n’est pas une tragédie, a critical study of the works of David Markson.
