1 April DEADLINE: YAFF contest The deadline for the Young Authors Fiction Festival is upon us! The Library is the organizer of YAFF, a city-wide writing initiative that aims to strengthen community among English-speakers in the Paris area through storytelling. YAFF is free of charge and open to all students ages 5-18 in the greater Paris area. The deadline for submission is 1 April. 6 avril à 19h Rencontre avec CHARLOTTE FOUCHER ZARMANIAN pour son ouvrage Créatrices en 1900 : femmes artistes en France dans les milieux symbolistes (Mare et Martin), animée par ANNE LARUE Au passage du XIXe au XXe siècle, le puissant clivage entre genres masculin et féminin s’effrite, se trouble et met progressivement à mal l’idée que la création serait réservée aux hommes et, aux femmes, la procréation. Dans le domaine de l’art, les créatrices sont dès lors autant de figures inattendues, importunes et menaçantes, susceptibles de remettre en cause l’ordre établi. L’auteure explore ici les stratégies attentistes, « caméléonesques » ou subversives que les femmes artistes déploient pour créer. Loin des poncifs, des chemins battus et des causes rebattues, cette recherche passe de l’autre côté du miroir, du côté de ces femmes qui désirent, agissent, produisent dans le contexte des années 1900 encore largement hostiles à leur cause. Un ouvrage abondamment illustré, passionnant, féministe. Charlotte Foucher Zarmanian est chargée de recherches au CNRS (laboratoire LEGS - UMR 8238). Docteure en histoire de l’art de l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, sa thèse a reçu le Prix du musée d’Orsay en 2013. 3^rd and 4^th MAY: The American Library of Paris is delighted to welcome back the celebrated San Francisco theater company WORD FOR WORD that puts great American short stories on stage. Returning to Paris for the 21st year, Word for Word will perform two short stories on 3 and 4 May at 20h00 at the Théâtre Adyar. The first story is Emma Donoghue's "Night Vision," from The Woman Who Gave Birth To Rabbits, about a young, blind Frances Browne who thrived on education when it was allowed her, and whose determination made her one of Ireland’s most renowned poets. The other story is Colm Tóibín's "Silence," from The Empty Family, which recreates the story of the transient and intense love-affair between Lady Gregory and the young poet Wilfrid Scawen Blunt.  Reservations for tickets will begin on 4 April, with an online form available from the Library's website. The performance on Tuesday 3 May will be followed by a reception at the Library. Please note that all seating is on a first-come-first-served basis; there is no reserved seating.
