invitent à venir entendre Michèle Cohen-Halimi, Emmanuel Fournier, Martin Richet et
Bénédicte Vilgrain. Biobibliographies : Née en
1963, Michèle Cohen-Halimi, philosophe, est maître de conférences à l'Université de
Paris X-Nanterre. Co-éditrice avec Francis Cohen de Je
te continue ma lecture, Mélanges pour Claude Royet-Journoud (P.O.L
1999) et de Les Intensifs, poètes du XXI° siècle (Critique n°
735-736, Minuit, 2008), elle a contribué, régulièrement par des traductions, à
la revue Fin de Jean Daive, et est, depuis plusieurs numéros,
la critique privilégiée de la revue Anagnoste dirigée par Claude
Royet-Journoud dans CCP : Cahier Critique de Poésie. Michèle
Cohen-Halimi a publié, chez Éric Pesty Éditeur, une traduction du philosophe
allemand Werner Hamacher : Anataxe. Virgule. Balance. Notes pour W de Jean Daive,
et un essai intitulé Figuren, consacré à Théorie des
prépositions de Claude Royet-Journoud (P.O.L, 2009). ::::: Né en
1959, Emmanuel Fournier est l’auteur
de deux ouvrages publiés aux Éditions de l’Éclat : Croire devoir penser a
paru en 1996. Le livre est composé de 999 propositions rédigées à l’infinitif,
dans une langue « déconjuguée » qui fait abstraction des substantifs,
en privilégiant exclusivement les modes impersonnels du verbe : l'infinitif, et
dans une moindre mesure le gérondif et les participes. L’Infinitif des
pensées, paru en 2000, met en parallèle différents types d’écriture : les
Carnets d’Ouessant, écrits sous forme de journal, des postfaces tardives
à Croire devoir penser, des transcriptions à l’infinitif de
Descartes, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Kant, Aristote ou Heidegger, ainsi que des
annotations, où se poursuit une méditation sur les implications et la mise en
œuvre de la langue infinitive. Parallèlement à ce travail d’écriture, Emmanuel
Fournier est un artiste qui utilise le dessin comme mode d’interrogation. Outre
plusieurs expositions, deux livres « écrits en dessin », parus chez
l’auteur à 20 exemplaires, ont précédé la publication des textes aux Éditions
de l’Éclat : Sur la lecture (Corduriès, 1989) et La
même chose (Corduriès, 1993). ::::: Né en 1977, Martin
Richet est traducteur, éditeur et
écrivain. Ont paru tout dernièrement L'ouverture du champ de
Robert (Editions Corti, 2012) et Les Sonnets de Ted Berrigan
(Editions Joca Seria, 2013). Attentif à ce qui a fait la spécificité de la
poésie américaine du siècle dernier – voire dans sa forme de publication –
Martin Richet est également éditeur d'une collection nomade intitulée «
Jacataqua » dont le projet semble être de traduire et de publier, sous forme
de chapbooks en français, certains des titres les plus vifs
parus dans la collection historique de Lyn Hejinian : Tuumba. Après un livre de
Barrett Watten publié dans la collection « Phacochère » au Quartanier en 2007,
la traduction de Gesualdo de
Lyn Hejinian a paru chez Éric Pesty Éditeur en 2009 dans la collection agrafée.
La part de création dans l'écriture de Martin
Richet forme si l'on peut dire un contrepoint à son travail de
traduction. Bureau vertical / Onze pour table a paru aux
Cahiers de la Seine en 2006 ; L'Autobiographie de Gertrude Stein s'offre
comme une seconde cristallisation dans sa fréquentation assidue de l'auteur
américaine. ::::: Bénédicte Vilgrain crée le Théâtre Typographique en 1984, dans une
cour d'immeuble, sur une presse à épreuve. Elle y imprime des livres à tirage
limité d'assez grands formats, marqués par son intérêt pour les littératures
orales d'Asie et d'Afrique, et l'anthropologie. Elle est rejointe par Bernard
Rival en 1988 ; leur collaboration depuis lors a constitué la maison d'édition
précieuse et exigeante que nous connaissons aujourd'hui : http://thty.fr/
Entre 1981 et 1991, Bénédicte Vilgrain étudie le tibétain, dans l'espoir
explique-t-elle « d'établir un Wortschatz, un vocabulaire où chaque
mot recensé aurait été traité comme la clef d'usages diversifiés,
métaphoriques, évoqués dans des proverbes. Mais la langue tibétaine est un
medium aussi éloigné de la langue française qu'un rêve peut l'être de son
interprétation discursive. » (Abigail Lang, « L'interprétation des raves,

2001, Bénédicte Vilgrain a décidé de « ranger », pour que rien ne se perde, son
vocabulaire dans une « Grammaire », établie sur le modèle classique de la
Grammaire de Thonmi Sombhota (VII° siècle), où chaque articulation phonologique
de base de la langue tibétaine fait l'objet, sous l'aspect d'une strophe en vers
de sept syllabes nommée śloka, d'un développement grammatical et phonétique.

la Poésie is one of the major literary events of the year when hundreds of
booksellers, publishers, writers, musicians and lovers of poetry occupy place
Saint-Sulpice on the Left Bank of Paris. Ireland has been chosen as ‘country of
honour’ this year and will be represented by Eavan Boland, Ciaran Carson, Eamon
Grennan, Biddy Jenkinson, Medbh
McGuckian, Maighréad Medbh, Paula
Meehan, John Montague, Eiléan
Ní Chuilleanáin, Joseph Woods.
Together with readings and discussions, two new anthologies and two new
collections in French translation will be launched. Two concerts - traditional
music and jazz (see Music section)
– will resound in this beautiful square in the centre of the 6ème
arrondissement. In conjunction with the Marché de la Poésie, a month-long
series of poetry events is taking place in Paris and its outskirts. The CCI is
organising three evenings for this Périphérie, the first of which is the launch
of the Marché and its Périphérie at the Embassy of Ireland on 27 May in the presence
of the great poet Paul Durcan (by invitation
only). On 13 June, Seamus Heaney, Nobel
Laureate, will give a special reading in the courtyard of the Centre Culturel
Irlandais; on 27 June the final evening of the Périphérie will feature readings
by Harry Clifton, Vona Groarke and Derek

AT DUROC, the Paris literary journal, invites you to a reading of recent work by
poets TIMOTHY
BRADFORD, CHRISTINE HERZER and FIONA SZE-LORRAIN. Bios: TIMOTHY BRADFORD is the author of the poetry
collection Nomads with Samsonite (BlazeVOX [books], 2011). In 2005, he
received the Koret Foundation’s Young Writer on Jewish Themes Award for a
novel-in-progress based on the history of the Vélodrome d’Hiver. From 2007 to
2009, he was a guest foreign researcher at the Institut du Temps Présent in
Paris. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State
University. CHRISTINE HERZER is a poet and
visual artist currently in residence at La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.
She is the author of i cheated on Chanel No.5 (Dancing Girl Press, 2013)
and i wanted to be a pirate (h-ngm_n eBooks, 2009). Her work appears in
numerous international journals, art reviews and online publications such as Fence,
American Letters & Commentary, The New York Quarterly, The Volta,
Drunken Boat, Spiral Orb and BlazeVOX. Her art exhibition Je
m’existe opened at Evi Gougenheim’s Artplace on May 30. FIONA SZE-LORRAIN writes and translates in English,
Chinese and French. Her new poetry collection, My Funeral Gondola, is
published as a Mãnoa Books title by El Léon Literary Arts in 2013. Her debut
poetry title, Water the Moon, appeared in 2010. In addition to her four
books of translation of contemporary Chinese poets from Zephyr Press, she has
also translated Romanian-born French poet Ghérasim Luca and American poet Mark
Strand. A co-founder of Cerise Press, an international journal of
literature, arts and culture, and a contributing editor of Mãnoa: A Pacific
Journal of International Writing, she works as an editor at Vif Editions,
Paris. Also a zheng harpist, she has performed worldwide. Reading at:

June 6pm Saul Williams Saul Williams is an American poet,
singer, musician, writer and actor. His work crosses boundaries and genres, but
is united by his incredible talent for using words and beats in spell-binding
performances. He started his career as an open-mic poet, winning the title of
Grand Slam Champion at the Nuyorican Poets Café in 1996. Soon after, he
featured in the film Slam (as both actor and writer), which won the Sundance
Festival Grand Jury Prize and the Cannes Camera d’Or. Saul Williams has
collaborated with Nas, the Fugees, Blackalicious, Erykah Badu, and Nine Inch
Nails, among many others. He released his much acclaimed, self-titled debut
album in 2004. Saul Williams is the author of four collections of poetry and,
most recently, editor of Chorus: A Literary Mixtape, described as an anthem for
a new generation of poets. Williams’s latest album, Volcanic Sunlight, was
released in 2011. When asked about the purpose of poetry in a film that
followed, he gave this response: “It is the window that opens, that allows some
air in, some other insight, some other possibility so we can explore all that
we feel, all that we think but with the space to see more than what we know,
because there is so much more than we know. If I didn't open myself to the
possibilities of the unknown, then I would be lost." Saul Williams’s

petite rafle provençale ... (Editions du Seuil)rencontre avec Nelcya Delanoë. Ethno-historienne, traductrice, écrivain,
Nelcya Delanoë est professeur honoraire des Universités. Elle a publié une
dizaine de livres et de nombreuses traductions. Intriguée par un poème
d’Aragon décrivant une rafle survenue en août 1942 à Villeneuve-lès-Avignon,
apparemment ignorée de tous, Nelcya Delanoë décide de chercher à en savoir plus
long. D’autant qu’elle réside pour partie à Villeneuve. Aucun témoignage oral
disponible. Elle explore alors les archives et finit par trouver, non sans mal,
la liste des dix Juifs étrangers visés par la rafle du 26 août 1942. Ce
faisant, d’autres archives, parfois privées, et quelques témoignages oraux la
mettent sur la piste d’une deuxième rafle, en date du 17 juillet 1943, et dont
nul n’a jamais eu connaissance. Pas même un poète. Celle-ci a été menée par des
organisations locales, floues et autonomes, voyous et truands compris, en
étroites relations avec la police allemande et les appareils maréchalistes.
Nelcya Delanoë a pu finalement établir la liste des personnes victimes de ces
arrestations. D’une petite rafle provençale dévoile ainsi petit à petit les
ambiguïtés mais aussi la richesse et la complexité de la vie sous Pétain dans
un village du Gard, situé en zone « non occupée », pendant la Seconde Guerre
mondiale. Par la même occasion, ce travail de micro-histoire met en évidence
les difficultés de l’enquête et ses croisements, inattendus, avec la vie de
l’auteur. Jusqu’aux « Voisins vigilants » de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon en ce début

returns to the Library to present the works of artist Marc Chagall reflecting
themes from the exhibit Marc
Chagall: Between War & Peace, now on view at the Musée du
Luxembourg through 21 July. From his Russian period in his hometown of Vitebsk
during the First World War to the biblical paintings evoking the rise of the
Nazism and onto his post-WWII life as a refugee in the U.S., Chagall has
embodied the decades of strife that defined the 20th century. Boïcos will take
us on a tour through Chagall's art of these periods, both dark and hopeful. AT:

de l’exposition d’œuvres de CATY LÉVÊQUE “La grande bibliothèque de Pétaouchnock” L’artiste Caty Lévêque et sa complice Fiona Britee ont entrepris de
faire connaître Pétaouchnock, un pays avec sa culture, sa langue, sa
géographie, son histoire et ses coutumes, comme un vrai pays ! L’exposition présente
une série de livres sous cadres accompagnés de leur quatrième de couverture,
prêtés par sa Grande Bibliothèque. Des pièces uniques offrant une palette
variée qui va de l’incongru à une poésie surréaliste en passant par un humour
nonchalant. A noter : les auteures de ces ouvrages ne sont que des femmes ;

Prize in Literature 1995 was awarded to Seamus Heaney “for works of lyrical

17th June 7pm Join us for a summer’s evening of verse with three wonderful poets – Chris Garrecht-Williams, Tino Villanueva, and Alejandro Murguía, the San Francisco Poet Laureate. BIOS: Alejandro Murguía is the author of Southern Front and This War Called Love (both winners of the American Book Award). His non-fiction book, The Medicine of Memory, highlights the Mission District in the 1970s during the Nicaraguan Solidarity movement. He is a founding member and the first director of The Mission Cultural Center. He was a founder of The Roque Dalton Cultural Brigade, and co-editor of Volcán: Poetry From Central America. Currently he is a professor in Latina Latino Studies at San Francisco State University. He is the author of the short story ‘The Other Barrio’ which first appeared in the anthology San Francisco Noir and was recently filmed in the streets of the Mission District. In poetry he has published Spare Poems, and this year a new collection called Native Tongue. He is the Sixth San Francisco Poet Laureate and the first Latino poet to hold the position. Chris Garrecht-Williams has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, where he was a 2010-2011 Teaching Fellow. He is a Senior Poetry Editor at Narrative Magazine, and his poems have appeared in Forklift: Ohio, The Chattahoochee Review, Beecher's Magazine, The Chiron Review, and elsewhere. Chris Garrecht-Williams will be reading as part of our New Writers’ Series. Tino Villanueva writes and also paints. Slender Human Weight (Guernica Editions, 2009), long-listed for the ReLit
award, and The Bones of his Being (Guernica Editions, 2012), as well as three
chapbooks: Solitude in Cloud and Sun, A Transport of Grief, and The Time
Between Us, which won the Canadian Poetry Association’s Shaunt Basmajian Award.
Her poems have been widely anthologized and have appeared in literary journals

the book: The French capital underwent an epic transformation in the second half
of the 19th century, led by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, following the
vision of Napoleon III. In his book Paris
Reborn: Napoléon III, Baron Haussmann, and the Quest to Build a Modern City, author
and architect Stephane Kirkland takes us through the evolution of Paris, the
politics of its urban design and the controversy surrounding the massive
project. BIO: Stephane Kirkland was
born in 1969 just outside Paris. He created an architecture studio in the
Midi-Pyrénées region of southwest France, building, among other things, the
extension of the junior high school of Pierrefitte-Nestalas (with Pierre
Cassou), the public spaces around the medieval Nestalas church, also in
Pierrefitte-Nestalas, and a park in Cauterets. He obtained an MBA from the
Stern School of Business, New York University, in 2000. He then worked as a
strategy consultant at Marakon Associates in London and Amsterdam. In 2002, he
joined international energy company Centrica plc, where he occupied roles in
strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and general management in London, Paris,
New York and Pittsburgh until 2011. In 2012 he returned to Paris to again

21st June 6pm Join this month’s philosopher in the library, Darren Frey, for Dr. Heidegger or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb Both folk psychology and actual empirical research suggest that technology impacts our ways of thinking. Heidegger anticipates such speculation by reflecting on the essence of technology. Instead of merely positing correlations between technology's prominence and certain modes of thinking, he suggests that one's very posture toward the world is brought into question and sometimes framed by technology. The urgent questions, Heidegger argues, do not take the correlative form: eg., Does Facebook weaken one's actual social attachments? This talk will present the questions concerning technology that Heidegger thought were most important while outlining the general contours of his own thought. 24th June 7.30pm Chris Adrian and Meghan O’Rourke (in collaboration with NYU summer program) Meghan O'Rourke is the author of The Long Goodbye (Riverhead), a memoir about grief, and the poetry collections Once and Halflife (W.W. Norton). A former poetry editor for The Paris Review, she is also a culture critic for Slate magazine and a founding editor of the web site Double X. She is the recipient of the 2008 May Sarton Poetry Prize. Her essays and poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, The Kenyon Review, Best American Poetry, 32 Poems, and more. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, where she grew up. Chris Adrian is the author of a short story collection, A Better Angel, and three novels, Gob's Grief, The Children's Hospital, and The Great Night. About the Author Lan Samantha Chang is the author of a collection of short fiction, Hunger, and two novels, Inheritance and All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost. Her work has been translated into nine languages and has been chosen twice for The Best American Short Stories. Hunger was a finalist for a Los Angeles Times Book Award, and Inheritance won the PEN/Beyond Margins Prize for the Novel. She has received creative writing fellowships from Stanford University, Princeton University, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. WORKSHOP WITH CECILIA WOLOCH,
August 8 – 14, 2013. Join American poet Cecilia Woloch for an intensive five-day poetry workshop
in the heart of old Istanbul. Workshop participants stay in the lovely hotel
Kybele in Sultanahmet, only minutes from the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, and
Topkapi Palace. Workshops meet mornings in the Kybele’s rooftop museum, and
focus on new work generated in response to prompts, readings and the sights and
sounds of Istanbul. Optional afternoon and evening activities include a
Bosphorous cruise, visit to the Spice Bazaar, Sufi dancing, readings and
dinners and meetings with local writers and artists. Lodging (shared room),
including breakfast daily, plus workshop: $1,600. (A few private rooms are
available @ $2,200.) An optional, pre-workshop retreat to the world heritage
site Cappadocia is also planned, Aug. 4 – 8, at an additional cost of
$700/person, including roundtrip airfare from Istanbul, all airport transfers,

Artist Asks Strangers & Lovers To Write Him Love Letters: It’s not often we find ourselves writing letters these days, let alone love letters, but that’s exactly what Matthew Rose is asking anyone with a pen, paper, envelope and stamp to do for his exhibition The Letters, taking place at Converge Gallery in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (July 5 – August 31, 2013). The American artist, who lives and works in Paris, France has conceived of an exhibition that is largely dominated with letters, postal ephemeral, words, texts and pictures that are notes and messages to other people, some fictional, some real exploring and reporting via letters on a variety of subjects from love and death and the National Rifle Association to suicide notes in cast-away bottles to a 10-volume set of books entitled, you guessed it, MATTHEW ROSE : THE LETTERS (The Early Years, Dirty Work, Assorted Scandals, etc). In this particular work the artist is asking artists and writers and lovers the world over to write letters care of him and mail them to the gallery. The unopened letters will be displayed for visitors to see and to take with them – unopened. Matthew Rose, known for his full on collage installations and large mail art exhibitions, is also the artist/curator of the global project A Book About Death, a world wide ongoing exhibition of mail art works on the subject of death. Here, though, the artist turns to love. “Unopened love letters touching upon all notions of love – unrequited, fulfilled, missed, forgotten, ongoing, funny, sad, tragic – would be a beautiful homage not just to love but to writing, that somewhat lost art we all used to be engaged in,” says the artist. “Largely anonymous, the letters will connect people in an abstract way, and the tension evoked will be potent and mysterious. It’s not unlike finding a love letter in an old library book. Those emotions are universal and powerful.” The artist adds that each love letter will be rubber stamped with a special logo for the exhibition. asked, that we first heard “the the”—and what are the ongoing costs of our
constant negotiations between what matters and what appears to
be mere matter? We are seeking poetry, poetics, audio, images, film, reviews,
interviews, and conversations for a January 2014 special issue of The Volta on the topic of “trash." Garbage. Junk. Waste. Refuse. Rubbish.
Despite a 50-year-old modern environmental movement, we send more of it to
landfills and incinerators today than ever before. Perhaps your work takes up
directly the problem of the proliferation of physical trash. Or, perhaps you
approach the topic at a slant, grappling with related concepts or experimenting
with an aesthetics of trashiness; wasting; value and (de)valuation,
worth and worthlessness; transience, reusing, remixing, recycling; toxicity and
contamination; abjection, excess, disgust. Consider sending completed projects,
documents, or work-in-progress for consideration. We are looking for previously

edited by Simon McCormack and Paul Hawkins, to be published in conjunction with
Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival, September 2013. Poems are invited on
