2 April 19h30 Ivy Writers invites you to a bilingual reading with Marilyn Hacker and Habib Tengour. Marilyn HACKER is the author of twelve books of poems, including Names (Norton, 2010), Essays on Departure (Carcanet Press, 2006), and Desesperanto (Norton, 2013) and an essay collection, Unauthorized Voices (University of Michigan Press, 2010). Her twelve volumes of translations from the French include Marie Etienne's King of a Hundred Horsemen (Farrar Strauss and Giroux, 2008), which received the 2009 American PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, Emmanuel Moses' He and I (Oberlin College Press, 2010), and Rachida Madani's Tales of a Severed Head (Yale University Press, 2012). A translation of work by Habib Tengour is forthcoming. For her own work, she is a past recipient of the Lenore Marshall Award for Winter Numbers, the Poets' Prize for Selected Poems, the National Book Award for Presentation Piece, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004, the American PEN Voelcker Award for poetry in 2010, and the Argana International Poetry Prize from Morocco's Bayt as-Sh'ir (House of Poetry) in 2011. She is a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. She lives in Paris, and is an editor of the journal Siècle 21. Habib TENGOUR is an Algerian writer, poet and anthropologist born in Mostaganam in 1947. He came to France in 1958 with his father, an Arabic teacher and militant nationalist who left Algeria to escape persecution from the police. Habib grew up in the political turmoil of the Algerian War, emigration, and the French Left. He continued his studies in Paris, but, after having graduated with a degree in Sociology, he returned to Algeria in order to do his national service, first in the military and then as a civilian teaching at Constantine University, where he finished his PhD thesis and continues to teach. Since then, he has split his time between Algeria and France, and between his academic and literary pursuits. Beginning with his first story-poem, Tapapakitaques, la poésie-île (Paris, 1976), Habib Tengour developed a style that moves between the surreal and the lyrico-epic of the Arab poetic tradition. A lyric and playful poet, Habib Tengour cemented his reputation as a major author among the new generation of North African French-language writers in the early '80s with the publications of Le Vieux de la montagne (Sindbad, Paris, 1983) and Sultan Galièv ou la rupture de stocks (Sindbad, Paris, 1985). He has written several books of prose: Le Vieux de la montagne, Sultan Galièv ou la rupture de stocks, L’Épreuve de l’arc (1990), Gens de Mosta (1997/ prix ADELF), Le Poisson de Moïse (2001) as well as poetry: L’Arc et la cicatrice (ENAL, 1983), Ce Tatar-là (2002), Épreuve 2 (2002), Traverser (2002), États de chose suivi de Fatras et La Sandale d’Empédocle (2003). His latest books of prose are Le Maître de l’Heure (Editions de la Différence, 2008) and Dans le Soulèvement. Algérie et Retours (Editions de la Différence, 2012). 4 and 11 April 19.30 Beckett on Film: Nineteen different directors brought Beckett’s nineteen stage works to the screen in 2001. A selection of films from this ambitious project will be screened as part of the festival’s homage to Irish cinema: Krapp’s Last Tape, Ohio Impromptu, Act Without Words, Play. 4 April 18.30 Lancement du livre l'Atelier de Rencontres: Dans cet ouvrage, Jean-Louis Pradel dresse un panorama de la création depuis la fin des années soixante-dix jusqu'à aujourd'hui à travers une palette de 50 retranscriptions choisies parmi plus de 500 rencontres avec des personnalités culturelles de premier plan.Forte de son passé prestigieux, l’École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs détient ainsi un véritable trésor d’intérêt national ! Soit plus de trente ans d’enregistrements audio-visuels, mémoire vive de rencontres couvrant tous les champs de la création et de la recherche en arts plastiques, philosophie et esthétique, architecture, design, graphisme, cinéma et arts vivants. L’Atelier de rencontres, lieu ouvert au sein duquel sont accueillies les personnalités qui font l’actualité culturelle et artistique et qui viennent échanger avec les étudiants et le public, fut fondé en 1975 par Michel Tourlière, alors directeur de l’École, et Pierre Cabanne, critique d’art, journaliste et écrivain, rejoint à partir de 1976 par Jean-Louis Pradel, enseignant en sciences humaines et histoire de l’art. Aujourd’hui, le recul permet de juger les modes et tendances de la période, les promesses ainsi que l’écart advenu entre le discours et la pratique. Le temps permet de poser un regard apaisé sur des chantiers, films ou expositions polémiques en leur temps... On y voit entrer en scène des artistes et des intellectuels pas ou peu encore reconnus. Des créateurs y développent la genèse de leurs projets, leur parti pris et méthodes de travail. On y retrouve aussi des personnalités étrangères qui ont influencé la création française. La réunion de ces témoignages passionnants dessine en creux les choix culturels de plus de trois décennies, héritières de Mai 68 et des bouleversements post -1989. 4 April 19h Josef Winkler: En coopération avec le Forum Culturel Autrichien, dans le cadre du programme de résidence « Écrivains en Sorbonne » Lecture et discussion avec l’auteur et son traducteur Bernard Banoun. Les œuvres de l’écrivain et romancier Josef Winkler sont ancrées dans la région autrichienne de la Carinthie, limitrophe de l’Italie et de la Slovénie. Dans une langue poétique, baroque et virtuose, il dépeint l’omniprésence de la religion et la vie oppressante d’un village reculé. Mais au fur et à mesure que son œuvre avance, il cherche à s’évader vers des pays lointains comme l’Inde et le Japon – ce dont ses livres les plus récents portent la trace –, tout en restant fidèle à ses thèmes et ses obsessions. Josef Winkler lira notamment des extraits de textes tout juste parus, Wortschatz der Nacht et Mutter und der Bleistift.  Né en 1953 en Carinthie, Josef Winkler publie depuis 1979 aux éditions Suhrkamp. Lauréat de nombreux prix littéraires, en particulier le prix Büchner 2008 et le Grand Prix national d’Autriche 2007, il est traduit dans plusieurs langues. 5 avril à 19h00 l'écrivain Jean-Michel Delacomptée lira à la librairie Mots et Motions,  s’il a été choisi pour le cinquième événement “Mots et motions”, après Nancy Huston, Bernard Noël, Ousmane Sow et Béatrice Soulé, et Denis Hirson, c’est que Denis Hirson est fasciné par son œuvre, par son style littéraire, et la façon passionnée dont il s’engage en tant qu’écrivain. Ce que dit Wikipedia de l’oeuvre de Jean-Michel Delacomptée:  Sa production d’écrivain consiste principalement en des portraits littéraires de personnages historiques et de gens de lettres. Personnages historiques : Henriette d’Angleterre avec Madame la Cour la Mort (1993), François II avec Le Roi Miniature (2000), Ambroise Paré avec Ambroise Paré La main savante (2007). Gens de lettres : La Boétie et Montaigne avec Et qu’un seul soit l’ami (1995), Racine avec Racine en majesté (1999), Mme de Motteville avec Je ne serai peintre que pour elle (2003), Bossuet avec Langue morte, Bossuet (2009), enfin Saint-Simon Le mémorialiste avec La grandeur, Saint-Simon (2011). À l’exception du Racine paru chez Flammarion, ces ouvrages ont tous été publiés chez Gallimard dans la collection « L’un et l’autre » dirigée par Jean-Bertrand Lefèvre-Pontalis. Il s’agit bien de portraits littéraires, non de biographies. Ces portraits usent en effet d’une écriture narrative qui, sans recours à la fiction, tend à effacer la frontière conventionnelle entre le récit romanesque, l’érudition biographique et l’esprit d’analyse propre à l’essai. Extérieurs à tout genre spécifique, ne rentrant dans aucun classement prédéfini, ils relèvent de la littérature générale tant par la liberté de leur composition que par l’importance accordée au style, sans lequel, selon Delacomptée, « une œuvre ne saurait se prétendre littéraire ». Aujourd’hui je préfère me déclarer antimilitariste pour signifier mon opposition à toutes les opérations menées pour promouvoir la production et la vente d’armes.” Sociologue, née en 1920, A. Michel est l’une des pionnières des études sur le rôle et la place des femmes dans la famille, au travail et dans la société. Connue internationalement, elle est l’une des rares en France à travailler sur l’articulation du pouvoir d’Etat avec l’industrie de l’armement, “formation sociale aggravée du patriarcat”, et sur la “culture de guerre” et son impact sur les femmes. Five writers will be reading from their work: IAN MONK, SARAH RIGGS, CHRISTOPHE LAMIOT ENOS, MARGO BERDESHEVSKY, RUFO QUINTAVALLE. Bios: IAN MONK was born near London and now lives in Lille, France, where he works as as writer and translator of, among others, Georges Perec, Daniel Pennac, Raymond Roussel and Marie Darrieussecq. He became a member of the Oulipo in 1988. He has published books in English (Family Archaeology and Writings for the Oulipo), in French (Plouk Town and La Jeunesse de Mek-Ouyes), and both (N/S, with Frédéric Forte).  SARAH RIGGS is the author of several books of poetry, including most recently, The Autobiography of Envelopes (Burning Deck, 2012) and 60 Textos (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2010). She is currently working on a series of film poems based on texts by Virginia Woolf. She lives in Paris, and teaches at NYU-in-France. CHRISTOPHE LAMIOT ENOS spent over fifteen years living in English-speaking countries before settling in Paris. He has published literary essays and several verse narratives, most of which came out in the “Poésie” collection headed by Yves di Manno at Flammarion, Paris. He writes both in French and English. MARGO BERDESHEVSKY, born in New York City, had a first career as an actress before becoming a writer. Her newest poetry collection is Between Soul and Stone (Sheep Meadow Press), and her But a Passage in Wilderness was also published by Sheep Meadow Press. Her book of short stories, Beautiful Soon Enough (illustrated with her montages,) received Fiction Collective Two’s American Book Review/Ronald Sukenick/ Innovative Fiction Award (University of Alabama Press); other honors include the Robert H. Winner Award from the Poetry Society of America, 8 Pushcart Prize nominations, 2 Pushcart "special mention" citations, the Chelsea Poetry Award. Her works have appeared in literary journals including Kenyon Review, Agni,, New Letters, Poetry International, Cutthroat, Poetry Daily, Cerise, Meena, The Southern Review, and in Europe in Poetry Review (UK), The Wolf, Europe, Siècle 21, & Confluences Poétiques. Forthcoming: a multi-genre novel titled Vagrant.  RUFO QUINTAVALLE was born in London in 1978, studied at Oxford and the University of Iowa and now lives in Paris. He is the author of Make Nothing Happen (Oystercatcher Press, 2009), Dog, cock, ape and viper (corrupt press, 2011) and Liquiddity (Oystercatcher Press, 2011). From 2009 until 2012 he was poetry editor for the award-winning webzine, Nthposition, and before that was on the editorial board for Upstairs at Duroc. His work has been widely published in print and online journals around the world and has been nominated for both the Michael Marks Award and the Pushcart Prize. 10 April19h Rencontre avec DOMINIQUE BOURQUE pour l’ouvrage qu’elle a co-dirigé “De l’assignation à l’éclatement. Continuités et ruptures dans les représentations des femmes”, Cahiers de l’IREF. Multidisciplinaire, l’ouvrage examine les mécanismes de représentation (à la fois place et image) dans les dynamiques et les rapports sociaux de sexe/genre. A partir de l’analyse des discours des médias, des politiques, de la fiction, des pratiques créatrices ou des préconceptions, il montre comment les représentations tanguent entre le pôle convenu de l’assignation et celui, libérateur, de l’éclatement comme condition préalable aux choix, à la pleine liberté. D. Bourque, spécialisée en Lettres françaises à l’Institut d’études des femmes de l’Université d’Ottawa (Canada) a travaillé entre autres sur l’œuvre de Monique Wittig, sur le féminisme, le lesbianisme et la notion d’exil. 11 April 18h30 By invitation of the Center for Writers & Translators and the Department of Comparative Literature & English, Jeffrey Greene and Ralph Petty will present their new book, no. 20 in the Cahiers Series, Shades of the Other Shore. The two, writer and artist, share rural American beginnings, but have since discovered a new life in France, in sparsely populated French areas of Burgundy and the Ardèche, respectively. Their cahier offers a deep mapping of their adopted regions: Greene’s sequence of sketches and poems explores imagined correspondences between personal and historical ghosts tied to the seasons; Petty's watercolours record a journey to the source of a local river. The result is a rich artistic translation, through their American sensibilities, of the landscapes of their chosen homes. Jeffrey Greene is the author of four poetry collections, one volume of memoirs, and two nature books. He directs Creative Writing at AUP. Ralph Petty’s book of drawings, Démons Quotidiens, with Canadian writer Nancy Huston, was published in 2011. Figure légendaire hantant les espaces vierges de la conquête de l’Ouest, Billy the Kid n’a que 21 ans quand il tombe sous les balles du shérif Pat Garrett. Avec son livre, Les œuvres complètes de Billy the Kid, l’auteur canadien Michael Ondaatje réunit des poèmes et des coupures de presse imaginaires pour rendre grâce au destin d’étoile filante de celui qui ne s’imaginait sûrement pas faire un jour les grandes heures du cinéma Hollywoodien. Hors-la-loi d’un théâtre qu’il ne cesse de faire sortir de ses gonds pour mieux stimuler notre imagination, Dan Jemmett reconstitue avec humour les scènes de hold-up, les règlements de compte et les évasions risquées dans un saloon de fantaisie aux allures d’antique cinéma porno situé à une portée de fusil de la frontière mexicaine. Conçue comme la bande originale d’un film, le mix des vinyles posés sur une platine fait la part belle aux standards d’Otis Redding, à ceux des Beach Boys et de Memphis Slim, tandis que la bande épique des comédiens chasseurs de prime se lance sur la trace de Billy. Pour notre plus grand plaisir, Emma Darlow, Andrew Hachey, John Fitzgerald Jay, Rick Kemp et Kristin Slaysman se partagent alors les moments forts du catalogue déraisonnable des frasques de ce jeune homme à la réputation trouble et à la gâchette un peu trop facile. 15 April 19h Ursula Krechel: En coopération avec les Amis du Roi des Aulnes. Lecture et discussion avec l’auteure. Modération : Joachim Umlauf et Nicole Bary. À l'automne 2012, le Prix du Livre de la Foire de Francfort était décerné à Ursula Krechel pour son roman Landgericht (éd. Jung und Jung), vingt-troisième livre de l'écrivain, connue davantage pour sa poésie que pour son œuvre romanesque. Le roman s'articule autour du personnage de Richard Kornitzer : juge, né à Breslau au début du XXe siècle, chassé de sa charge par les lois antisémites des nazis, émigré à Cuba sans sa femme ni ses enfants, la guerre ayant éclaté entretemps. Les deux enfants réussiront à gagner l'Angleterre avec l'un des derniers convois d'enfants juifs. Pendant presque dix ans, les membres de cette famille ne se verront pas. Le roman commence précisément avec le retour du père. Dans une grande fresque qui s'appuie sur une histoire authentique, Ursula Krechel aborde, avec une précision et une honnêteté rares, le thème du retour des émigrés, les "Remigranten", dans l'Allemagne d'après-guerre, et de leur rejet par la société de la République fédérale naissante. Le tableau est saisissant, il fait sortir de l'oubli des êtres, des situations et des années effacés des mémoires par la vague puissante du miracle économique annoncé. Née en 1947 à Trèves, Ursula Krechel a étudié la littérature allemande, l'histoire de l'art et du théâtre et enseigné dans plusieurs universités. Depuis 1974, l'année de ses débuts littéraires, elle a publié poésie, pièces radiophoniques, essais et romans, dont Shanghai fern von wo en 2009. La traduction de Landgericht paraîtra en 2014 aux éditions Carnets Nord.

16 avril de 16h à 18h Writer and artist Caroline Bergvall will be introducing her work by focusing on gestures of writing as an issue of methodology, leading to text-based performance. Michaux' "dessins écrits" and Smithson's "heap of language" are two models of thinking and composing writing performance that have been crucial to Bergvall's poetics and her own graphic and installation work. She will also show examples of works by contemporary artists whose methods are of great interest here: Fiona Templeton, Aaron Williamson, Kara Walker, Fiona Banner, Jeremy Deller...BIO: French-Norwegian and based in London, Caroline Bergvall is a writer and cross-disciplinary artist working across media, languages and artforms. A strong exponent of writing methods adapted to contemporary audiovisual and contextual concerns, Bergvall is also known for her multilingual poetics, her work around new literacies, language use and cultural belonging. Her sound and language work frequently explores difficult historical and political events through interdisciplinary means. She has developed audioworks, visual textwork, net-based pieces, live performances, books, and sited installations, often in collaboration, both in Europe, Scandinavia and in North America where she presents her work and readings extensively. Christophe Lamiot Enos was born in Beaumont-le-Roger, France and spent over fifteen years in English-speaking countries. He now lives in Paris and is maître de conférences at the University of Rouen. He’s had two literary essays and seven verse narratives published in France and elsewhere, including four by Flammarion, Paris, in the “Poésie” collection directed by Yves di Manno. On April 16 he will be launching, The Sun Brings, his first collection of poems in English, just out from corrupt press. William Walrond Strangmeyer was born in Virginia, grew up in New York and New Jersey, where he went to Rutgers University. He has worked in many different fields of endeavor, including Palisades and other amusement parks as a caller, as well as banks, book stores, the cinema, the theater, door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales, restaurants, insurance sales, taxi driving, telephone sales, warehouses and as a tour guide -- around the U.S. and in Copenhagen, Athens, Crete, London and Switzerland. Now a thirty-five-year resident of Paris, he continues to earn his living as an English language trainer and translator. His main influences are science fiction, doo-wop and psychedelic music along with the usual Eliot, Pound, Wallace Stevens, Poe, Catullus, Larkin, Elroy, Doctor Seuss, Forugh Farrokhzad, Baudelaire and also Emmylou Harris, Roy Jones Jr., Stoya, Leonard Cohen, Fedor Emilianenko, Bartok, Rodney Crowell, Nolan Strong, Leroy Griffin and Roy Orbison. Others come and go. Anne Talvaz was born in Brussels in 1963, and studied literature and languages in France. She spent several years in China and Brazil, and currently lives near Paris. She writes in French and has published three poetry collections: Imagines, 2002, Panaches de mer, lithophytes et coquilles, 2006, and Pourquoi le Minotaure est triste, 2010. She is also the author of an essay/novel on Lina Heydrich, Ce que nous sommes (2008) and a travel book about her experiences in China. She has translated poetry for many years from English and Spanish into French, and from French into English, most of it published in magazines and anthologies. Books include John Ashbery's Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, Nina Karacosta's Previous Vertigos, and Pansy Maurer-Alvarez's Ant-Small and Amorous. À l’issue de ses études à Cambridge, par manque de confiance en lui, Monsieur Blanc se sépare de Heike, sans doute l’amour de sa vie. De retour en Suisse, il mène une vie d’une banalité et d’une régularité étouffantes que seul son mariage de raison avec Vreni vient légèrement perturber. À la mort de celle-ci, le destin le conduit en Pologne où Heike s’est fixée. Il entame ainsi l’unique voyage de sa vie, une odyssée bouleversante et sans retour. Dans un style à la fois empreint d’une profonde tristesse et d’un humour corrosif, Roman Graf dresse le portrait d’un homme ordinaire dont la vie est d’une vacuité si désespérante qu’elle en devient grotesque. À la fois agaçant, pathétique et attachant, Monsieur Blanc est un personnage qu’on n’est pas près d’oublier. Né en 1978 à Winterthur, Roman Graf partage son temps entre sa ville natale et Leipzig. Forestier de formation, il a travaillé comme auxiliaire de vie pour handicapés, pigiste pour divers journaux, vendeur de rue, avant d’étudier au célèbre Literaturinstitut de Leipzig. Depuis, il se consacre entièrement à l’écriture et publie ses poèmes dans des magazines littéraires et des anthologies. Pour Monsieur Blanc, son premier roman (paru aux éd. Depuis sa disparition en 1982 la star internationale a fait l’objet de nombreux ouvrages, mais personne ne l’a approchée d’aussi près qu’Alice Schwarzer, pour la biographie qu’elle lui a consacrée : Romy Schneider – Mythos und Leben. Schwarzer la féministe et Romy-Sissi se connaissaient et s’appréciaient. « Alice Schwarzer et moi sommes les deux femmes les plus vilipendées d’Allemagne », disait Romy en 1976. Elle s’est ouvertement confiée en trois entretiens, et sa biographie n’est pas seulement l’histoire d’une actrice allemande qui a souffert du passé nazi de ses parents, mais celle d’une femme déchirée entre l’Allemagne et la France. Née en 1942 à Wuppertal, Alice Schwarzer a publié vingt-cinq livres dont deux en français, La petite différence et ses grandes conséquences (Éditions des Femmes, 1976) et Simone de Beauvoir aujourd’hui (Mercure de France, 1984 et 2009). NEW REVIEW: ANNOUNCING THE INTRODUCTORY NUMBER OF “ARTS OF WAR AND PEACE REVIEW” http://www.awpreview.univ-paris-diderot.fr/ We must know that war [pólemos] is common to all and strife [érin] is justice, and that all things come into being and pass away through strife. (Heraclitus, fragment#80) Why another periodical about war? Whether or not Heraclitus is right, war is a central cultural phenomenon, which always needs to be re-examined and re-contextualized. The distinguishing characteristic of this review is our conviction that war and peace are closely interrelated and cannot be studied separately: war and peace often seem to preclude each other, yet in the light of their varying effects and consequences they turn out to be inseparable.  This review explores that entangled relationship drawing on all the materials, discourses, representations, processes and procedures generated around this conflicted and contested alliance. Contributions to the review thus come from wide-ranging fields: poetry and literature, visual culture and history.
