3 February 17h Reading and Discussion with Olumide Popoola. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Olumide Popoola is a London-based Nigerian German author, poet, performer and speaker who presents internationally, often collaborating with musicians or other artists. The scope of her work concerns critical investigation into the 'in-between' of culture, language and public space where a, sometimes uncomfortable, look at complexity is needed. Olumide holds a BSc in Ayurvedic Medicine and a MA in Creative Writing. She is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Writing at the University of East London for which she is working on a novel that expands on her interest in cross-genre work, and the notion of vernacular or hybrid languages as literary opportunities for social and cultural change. Yo Zushi, described by Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC Radio 1 as “the spirit of Bob Dylan for the 21st century”, has released two albums on Pointy Records, as well as an EP on Italy’s Best Kept Secret Tape Label. Q Magazine gave his debut album Songs From a Dazzling Drift four stars, saying: “This could be the start of something major.” The Word praised his “perfectly constructed lyricism”; Dazed & Confused called his music “a masterclass in storytelling”. In 2008, Zushi released his second album Notes For Holy Larceny (five stars – Amelia’s Magazine; “A raw… intriguing talent” – Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 2), followed by a series of EPs and singles in 2009. Zushi has played on bills with Joanna Newsom, Scritti Politti, Willy Mason, Rachel Unthank, the Magic Numbers, Patrick Wolf and Micah P Hinson, among others.

7 February 19h Anna Katharina Hahn : Am Schwarzen Berg. Patrick Declerck - Démons me turlupinant (Gallimard). Prix Rossel 2012. «Enfance bruxelloise.

11 Feb - 3 Mar 2013 "Whistling Psyche" by contemporary Irish author Sebastien Barry. Joué en français. Mise en scène Julie BROCHEN. Avec Catherine HIEGEL, Juliette PLUMECOCQ-MECH et David MARTINS. Length 1 hour 5 minutes. Check website for show times. AT: Théâtre Gérard Philippe 59 Boulevard Jules Guesde. 93200 Saint Denis

Introduction par Laurence Bertrand Dorléac (Commissaire de l’exposition, et Sciences Po Paris) - 17h15 : Godehard Janzing (directeur adjoint du Centre Allemand d’Histoire de L’Art) : Internements. 17 February 19h
Projection: A Place of Rage.

20 February 19h30 Evenings with an Author: Tracy Metz, Water and the Dutch. Hurricane Sandy reawakened America, and the world, to what we already knew: our coasts are under threat. In Sweet&Salt, Tracy Metz lays out the special relationship that the Dutch have with the sea--how thoroughly water management is rooted in the culture--and she offers potential solutions for places around the world that are struggling with water issues as the climate becomes more uncertain. Her book digs deep into the Dutch success with water, how the Dutch have given their landscape an “extreme makeover,” and ponders what will and won’t work elsewhere. Join us for a discussion about one of the most vital issues facing the world.  Tracy Metz is a journalist and author on urban and spatial issues. She writes for the quality Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad and is an international correspondent for Architectural Record. In 2006-'07 she was awarded the prestigious mid-career Loeb Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She subsequently published a selection of her columns en essays about American planning and land use under the title On the Ground: Observations from Harvard. She also initiated a two-year collaboration between Harvard and the Dutch government on water management and climate change. She is now a visiting fellow at the GSD. From 2007-08, Tracy was invited to be a member of the Delta Commission, created to advise government on water safety in the Netherlands in the coming one to two centuries. She was previously a guest scholar at the Netherlands Institute for Spatial Research and a member of the Council for Rural Areas, the independent advisory board to the ministry of Nature & Agriculture. Tracy is the author of a number of books, often in collaboration with photographers, including FUN! Leisure and Landscape, about the influence of all the things we do in our free time on our surroundings (2002). In 2008 she collaborated with Maartje van den Heuvel on Nature as Artifice, a book and an exhibition on contemporary Dutch landscape photography. In February 2012 her most recent book appeared, Sweet&Salt: Water and the Dutch, about the metamorphosis of the Dutch landscape in order to accommodate a new relationship to water. Co-author Maartje van den Heuvel curated an exhibition by the same name in the OMA-designed Kunsthal in Rotterdam (14 Feb.-10 June 2012) with 125 works that reflect the various relationships between the Dutch and the water that has shaped their landscape and their identity. The book was reprinted within a month. AT: American Library in Paris,10 rue du Général Camou, 75007 Paris, Metro Alma-Marceau or Ecole Militaire

21 February 20h Projection and Discussion of She Male Snails with Eli Levén and Ester Martin Bergsmark. She male snails is a magical, unique and sensitive hybrid film about the different aspects of a changing androgynous body. We spend all our lives trying to find a balance between sexual identities and a body that is changing from childhood, to puberty through adulthood. She male snails is a film about the struggle to find balance and maybe also an inner peace. Through a series of intimate bathtub conversations between the director Ester Martin Bergsmark and the writer Eli Levén the film tells a story about survival. A harsh reality is mixed with a fictional story about a boy-hag. Come with on a journey to the promised of the Boy-Hag, a documentary fairy tale about a person between two sexes that in order to survive creates a third. Echoing early Derek Jarman the director Ester Martin Bergsmark is taking his physical imagery to a new level and puts light on parts of a human that the eye can not grasp. Winner of the Audience award, Best cinematography and Nordic Dragon Award at Gothenburg International Film Festival of 2012, The film student's jury prize and Honorary award for best debut film at Message 2 Man in St Petersburg, and also Best Artistic Achievement at OutFest, Los Angeles International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2012.  AT: La Mutinerie, 176 Rue Saint Martin, 75003 Métro: Rambuteau et Etienne Marcel

22 February 18h The talk will focus on the philosophical concept most strongly associated with G.W.F. Hegel's philosophy and its legacy: 'dialectic.'  Notwithstanding the complex and diverse theoretical reception of the concept (most notably in the historical forms that structure 'post-', 'anti-', and 'neo-' Hegelianism), not to mention the notorious difficulty of Hegel's own philosophical exposition, this talk will move at a consciously rudimentary level, staying close to only a small number of critical moments in Hegel's work (especially the Phenomenology of Spirit) and attempting to expose and explicate as clearly as possible central themes and salient meanings found therein.  Accordingly, the talk will advance through a series of basic reflections: it will inquire into the identity of the dialectic ('what is it?'), its operation ('how does it work?') and its consequences ('what happens as a result of dialectics?').  In the attempt to demystify Hegel's dialectic at an introductory level, it will hopefully become clear in what sense Hegel's work (especially the Phenomenology of Spirit) and attempting to expose and explicate as clearly as possible central themes and salient meanings found therein.  Accordingly, the talk will advance through a series of basic reflections: it will inquire into the identity of the dialectic ('what is it?'), its operation ('how does it work?') and its consequences ('what happens as a result of dialectics?').  In the attempt to demystify Hegel's dialectic at an introductory level, it will hopefully become clear in what sense Hegel's thought is still of relevance today. 27 February 19h30 Evenings with an Author: Fred Coleman, The Marcel Network.  He was a graduate student, and she was recently out of medical school. In 1943 the young Jewish couple found themselves trapped in German-occupied France. They had nothing—no money, no influence, no protection. And yet, improbably, these two disadvantaged people stood up against Nazi atrocities, risking their own lives to save others’ children. Syrian immigrant Moussa Abadi was thirty-three and his future wife, Odette Rosenstock, twenty-eight when they decided to hide Jewish children in Catholic convents and boarding schools or with Protestant families. Their clandestine organization—the Marcel Network—became one of the most successful operations of Jewish resistance in Europe. By the end of the war, 527 children owed their survival to the Abadis. Fred Coleman’s book also breaks historic ground, demonstrating how the Catholic Church, French Christians, and Jews themselves did far more to save Jewish lives than is generally known. Drawn from a multitude of sources, including hundreds of documents in the Abadis’ archives and dozens of interviews with the now grown children they rescued, The Marcel Network tells the rescuers’ full story for the first time. As an example of what only two people of good will can accomplish in the face of crimes against humanity, the Abadis’ story is a lesson for the world’s current trouble spots. As Newsweek’s Moscow bureau chief, Fred Coleman befriended Andrei Sakharov and other Russian dissidents. He admired the way they stood up against Soviet repression.  His prize-winning reporting on human rights in the USSR led him to the similar struggle of Moussa and Odette Abadi against Nazi atrocities, as recounted in The Marcel Network, his second book.
While reporting for Newsweek, Coleman rode a Soviet tank out of Afghanistan. He interviewed the last Soviet president, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the first president of postcommunist Russia, Boris Yeltsin. As the magazine’s diplomatic correspondent, based in Washington, he travelled the world with three American secretaries of state. Later, as a longtime Paris correspondent for Newsweek and other publications, Coleman covered terrorist attacks and the launch of the euro. He once lived for a week with the French Foreign Legion. Fred Coleman grew up in Oakland, California, and graduated from Princeton University. His first book, The Decline and Fall of the Soviet Empire, was published by St. Martin’s Press. He and his French wife, Nadine, live in Paris. AT: American Library in Paris,10 rue du Général Camou, 75007 Paris, Metro Alma-Marceau or Ecole Militaire

Submit up to three unpublished poems up to 40 lines each. Flash fiction, short stories, novel excerpts, and serialized stories up to 3,000 words.
Please include a 50 word bio with all submissions. Send all submissions in a SINGLE .DOC or .RTF document to themag.paris AT gmail DOT com Please - not .docx!!
