Part I) Paris Events and READINGS by date

2 October 18h The Dept. of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at AUP are very pleased to present a reading by fiction writers Anne Marsella and Stephen Dau, and poet Gerald Fleming. 2 October 19h Présentation du livre "Skyeview - A Sistah's view of the World" par son auteure, Skye Ward.

AT: Maison de l'Amérique latine, 217 Boulevard Saint-Germain  75007 Métro: Solférino.

4 October 18h30 The CWT and the Masters in Cultural Translation invites you all to join us at a talk by award-winning translator Damion Searls called “On Origins and Originals: St. Jerome and Translating Rilke.”.
Searls’ talk will include detailed discussion of the title poem in the collection of poems by Rainer Maria Rilke which he has recently put into English, “The Inner Sky: Poems Notes Dreams.” He will contrast three models of translation: Edith Grossman’s, his own, and that of St. Jerome (the patron saint of translation). Of Searls’s Rilke translation, Jonathan Franzen wrote: “[It] feels like a dream in which you can understand perfectly a language you didn’t think you knew. Rilke's thrilling precision and disorientations and purposefulness are all suddenly there....”  AT: The American University in Paris 147 rue de Grenelle, 75007 Métro: La Tour-Maubourg

Ses écrits recouvrent plusieurs genres : prose méditative (There ; Sea and Fog), poésie expérimentale (L’apocalypse arabe ; In/somnia), roman (Sitt Marie Rose), récit (Master of the Eclipse), théâtre (Un crime d’honneur)… ; Action Poétique ; If…). 10 October 19h30 Evenings with an Author at the American Library in Paris: Anne Korkeakivi.
“Serious geopolitics mixes with parenthood and the finer points of entertaining... Like her protagonist, Korkeakivi’s writing is cool, calm and composed." - The New York Times. On a lovely spring day in Paris – post-9/11 and several months after the London Underground bombings — Clare Moorhouse, the Irish-American wife of a high-ranking British diplomat, is arranging an official dinner crucial to her husband’s career. As she shops for fresh stalks of asparagus and works out the menu and seating arrangements, her day is complicated by the abrupt arrival of her son from boarding school in England and a random encounter with a man on the street, who may be a suspected terrorist. More unnerving still is a recurring face in the crowd, one that belonged to another, darker era of her life. But it can’t be him…Like Virginia Woolf did in Mrs. Dalloway, Anne Korkeakivi brilliantly weaves the complexities of an age into an act as deceptively simple as hosting a dinner party. About the author:  Anne Korkeakivi is the author of An Unexpected Guest (Little, Brown; April 2012). Her short fiction has been published by the Atlanticthe Yale Reviewthe Bellevue Literary Reviewthe Brooklyn Review, and other magazines, and in 2011 she was made a Hawthornden Fellow. Her nonfiction has appeared in the New York Timesthe Wall Street Journalthe Times (U.K.), the Village VoiceGourmetTravel & LeisureMs., and many other periodicals in the U.S. and the U.K. She was raised in New York City and western Massachusetts, and currently lives in Switzerland with her husband, who is a human rights lawyer at the U.N. in Geneva, and two daughters.

AT: Maison de l'Amérique latine, 217 Boulevard Saint-Germain  75007 Métro: Solférino.

17 October 19h30 Evenings with an author: Paula Deitz. Collected for the first time, the essays in Of Gardens record her great adventure of continual discovery, not only of the artful beauty of individual gardens but also of the intellectual and historical threads that weave them into patterns of civilization, from the modest garden for family subsistence to major urban developments. Deitz's essays describe how people, over many centuries and in many lands, have expressed their originality by devoting themselves to cultivation and conservation. About the author: Paula Deitz is Editor of The Hudson Review, a magazine of literature and the arts published in New York City. As a writer and cultural critic in the fields of art, architecture, design, and landscape design, she is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, The Architectural Review, and Gardens Illustrated. Her book, Of Gardens: Selected Essays, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2010.  She is currently writing a book titled Thibaut’s Heart: A Journey Through France and Time, to discover, by retracing the route of the 13th-century poet Thibaut de Champagne, how contemporary France lives with its medieval past.

18 October 18h Tonight, for Philosophers in the Library, Agnès Gayraud will discuss Simone de Beauvoir and ‘becoming a subject’. De Beauvoir is well-known as Jean Paul Sartre’s intellectual and intimate companion, and as author of the acclaimed and still resonant feminist work, The Second Sex. She is also the author of Les Mandarins, a seminal novel about the paradoxical difficulties of romantic commitment for the French Intelligentsia after the Second World War, and of her Memoirs, which offer us a vision of her complex and sometimes ambiguous self construction. During this event, we will ask the question; how, as a thinker and as a woman, did De Beauvoir define the effective meaning of existentialism? Agnès Gayraud is a philosophy professor and former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de la rue d’Ulm in Paris. During the Fall quarter 2011, she taught a class about De Beauvoir and Sartre at the Californian University of Stanford. AT: Shakespeare & Co., 37rue de la Bûcherie, Paris 5ème. M° St Michel

18 October 19h Et si on (re)lisait ... Table ronde avec Gilles Darras, Sylvie Le Moël, René-Marc Pille  Modération : Jean-Marie Valentin.

Introduction : Dirk Weissmann, Université Paris-Est Créteil.

At the start of the event Adam Biles will read a short extract of his work as part of the New Writers’ series. Liza Klaussmann worked as a journalist for the New York Times for over a decade. She has lived in Paris and is now based in London. Tigers in Red Weather is her first book. Magnificently told from five perspectives, it is an unforgettable debut: a simmering novel of passion, betrayal and secret violence beneath a polished and fragile facade. 'With sultry prose and a sure hand for suspense, Liza Klaussmann expertly weaves a vivid tale of glamour and despair, fidelity and betrayal, secrets and abandon. Tigers in Red Weather will have you furiously postponing all human interaction until its gripping finale.' – Maria Semple http://www.picador.com/Authors/Liza-Klaussmann  Sunjeev Sahota was born in 1981 in Derbyshire and continues to live in the area. Ours are the Streets is his first novel. It is ‘gripping . . . the story of a young British-Muslim from Sheffield who becomes a suicide bomber after his father's death. Inspired by the 7/7 bombers who attacked London in 2005, and written in the form of a confessional letter, the novel also foreshadows the case of Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, the Luton man who blew himself up in Stockholm in December. Sahota's treatment of his unlikely jihadi, Imtiaz, is convincing and sympathetic. The result is an intense psychological miniature.' – Financial Times http://www.picador.com/Authors/Sunjeev-Sahota Adam Biles will read a short extract of his work as part of the New Writers’ series, showcasing the work of up and coming writers before established authors and scheduled events. Red Bridge Press is now accepting submissions of writing that risks for an anthology that will be published in Spring, 2013. We seek new literary work that breaks from the confines of mainstream realism to surprise, delight, and challenge readers. Send us writing that crosses boundaries of form, content, and style either subtly or radically. Send us works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that are too fabulist, surrealist, or experimental for traditional publishers. We are glad to consider work that uses genre elements in interesting ways (e.g. an urban noir fairy tale), but we are not looking for work that is primarily aimed at a genre audience (e.g. high fantasy or hard science fiction). All submissions must be previously unpublished in print or electronically (e.g. on a publicly viewable website or personal blog). In addition to the anthology guidelines, please carefully read our general guidelines before submitting.

Submission Guidelines

We are interested in short and long pieces. Documents should be formatted for readability. Please send a brief cover letter and bio with your submission.
· Fiction: Submit one short story or up to 5 pieces of flash fiction in one document. Length of each piece should be between 15 and 15,000 words, give or take.

· Poetry: Submit up to 5 poems in one document. Each poem should be long enough to engage, short enough to not require its own chapbook.
· Nonfiction: Submit one essay or up to 5 short related pieces. Length guidelines are the same as those for fiction. Topic is wide open. Surprise us.
One submission per person, please. Simultaneous submissions are OK as long as you notify us right away if the work is accepted elsewhere.
The submission period closes on October 31, 2012. Send us your work today!

All submissions should be sent through our submissions portal:
http://redbridgepress.submittable.com/submit.
