The installations and sculptures of Maud Cotter and Vivienne Roche take on a new and intriguing resonance as darkness falls on the courtyard of the historic Irish College.

AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116 Paris Métro: Iéna. We get information and new ideas and experiences from "consequential strangers" that we can't get from our loved ones. A new place doesn't feel like "home" until you know a few consequential strangers. Blau has written more than eighty magazine pieces and a dozen other books, including the best-selling Baby Whisperer series. She also blogs for Psychology Today and More magazines. 14 October 7:00 P.M.: The Village Voice Bookshop is proud to invite you to hear C. K. Williams read from and discuss his collection of poetry, Wait and his essay On Whitman. Wait finds C. K. Williams in turns ruminative, stalked by "the conscience-beast, who harries me," and "riven by idiot vigor, voracious as the youth I was for whom everything was going too slowly, too slowly." Poems about animals and rural life are set hard by poems about shrapnel in Iraq and sudden desire on the Paris Metro; grateful invocations of Herbert and Hopkins give way to fierce negotiations with the shades of Coleridge, Dostoevsky, and Celan. What the poems share is their setting in the cool, spacious, book-lined place that is Williams' consciousness, a place whose workings he has rendered for fifty years with inimitable candor and style. In his essay, On Whitman, the poet sets aside the mass of biography and literary criticism that has accumulated around the work and person of Walt Whitman. In brief chapters with many quotations from Leaves of Grass, he explores the innovations, originality, and sheer genius of the poetry that has become “the unconscious” of much of the poetry of America and the world. The result is a personal reassessment of one master poet by another, as well as an unconventional and brilliant introduction – or reintroduction – to Whitman. C. K. Williams' books of poetry include Repair, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, and The Singing, winner of the National Book Award. His other books include an essay collection, Poetry and Consciousness, and a memoir, Misgivings. AT: Village Voice Bookshop 6, rue Princesse 75006 Métro: Mabillon

14 October 7:00 PM: Et si on (re)lisait... AT: Goethe-Institut - 17 avenue d'Iéna, 75116

15 October 7:00 P.M. After writing articles about art and travelling for various magazines throughout the 1980s, Susan Vreeland first ventured into the realm of fiction in 1988 with her biographical novel, What Love Sees. 18 October 7:00 P.M.: British journalists Ed Howker and Shiv Malik will be discussing The Jilted Generation at Shakespeare and Co. This much-talked-about book tells the sad, maddening story of how their generation’s future, once alive with possibility is being strangled by the culture of short-terminism. Radical, angry and passionate - while meticulously researched and carefully argued – Jilted Generation is a call-to-arms that will make sure you never look at your parents (or your children) in the same way again. The jilted generation is a British phenomenon referring to the generation born after Thatcher came to power. This generation is facing hard times. While their parents were handed free education, the jilted will be spend decades paying for theirs; while previous generations got jobs for life and bought homes to return to, the jilted generation are beingocked out. But if Britain's young people are insecure, unstable and poor, their parents are the richest generation ever to have lived and they have flatly failed to share the wealth. Ed Howker, 29, is associate editor of The Spectator, previously worked for Channel 4 Dispatches and The Independent. Shiv Malik, 29, was listed among the Evening Standard's most influential Londoners in 2008. Between them they have written for the New Statesman, Observer, Private Eye and the Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph and have appeared on Sky News, Front Row, Newsnight, the Jeremy Vine Show as well as Radio 4's PM and The Moral Maze. AT: La Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Site Richelieu. 5 rue Vivienne 75002 Paris. Métro: Bourse, Palais-Royal et Pyramides.

20 October 7:00 P.M. AT: Violette et Co. 102 Rue Charonne 75011. Métro: Charonne

Part II: Workshops & Courses linked to the arts

8 October 10:00 A.M. : Shakespeare and Company welcomes the Faber & Faber Academy back for a new writing workshop from 8-10 October – Adventures in Non-Fiction led by acclaimed writers Jon Ronson (Them: Adventures with Extremists, The Men who Stare at Goats) and Francis Wheen (How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World). There are only a few places left so if you are interested in participating please see http://www.faber.co.uk/article/2010/3/adventures-in-non-fiction-investigations-and-manif/
Over the course of three days in the surroundings of Shakespeare and Company bookshop, Paris, acclaimed authors Jon Ronson and Francis Wheen will illustrate how to investigate and write about the more absurd corners of recent political and social history.
Drawing from their own and other key works, the tutors will illustrate different and complimentary approaches to writing and researching this particular type of non fiction. Jon Ronson (Them: Adventures With Extremists, The Men Who Stare at Goats) travels around the world meeting political and religious extremists and crazy military and business gurus and documents in a human way the bubbles of irrationality they occupy. Francis Wheen (How Mumbo Jumbo Conquered the World, Strange Days Indeed) utilising his intricate knowledge of the battier aspects of our political landscapes to create humorous and brilliantly detailed collages of our times, drawing on individual biographies of eccentric characters
This lively and energetic course will also tackle difficult issues such as how to find your subject, draw out reluctant interviewees, unlock dead ends, pull your research into a coherent narrative and position yourself within the text. AT: Shakespeare & Co. 37 Rue de la Bûcherie 75005 Paris

Jeu Concours: Will You Come Up to Limerick?
« In Limerick at last! »
Nous vous proposons de tenter le limerick en participant à notre concours « Will you come up to Limerick?
