I) READINGS & EVENTS in PARIS in Sept 2008 (Already updated post email):

*22 Sept at 7pm: Jacqueline Karp reads from “Barbara Board's Reporting from Palestine”. Jacqueline discovered her mother's unpublished manuscript under the bed after she died, along with a suitcase full of cuttings & telegrams. Its publication had been stopped by censorship back in the 40s. Barbara had been a local journalist in Dorset, by-lined only as "our woman reporter", until her report on a capital punishment case sent her career soaring. Within months she was reporting from the Middle East, during the last years of the British Mandate in Palestine. What gives this account of the years 1943-1944 its unique standpoint is that Barbara didn't live the ex-pat life of parties & social gatherings in Tel Aviv, but chose to live in a village that was one of the first Jewish settlements, begun in the 1920s. She talks about how these Jewish settlers & their Arab neighbours lived in harmony before politics & extremism created a rift & eventually a wall. Along with her vivid descriptions of daily life, she covers all the important political events of the day. Barbara (1915-1986) was a rare female foreign correspondent, from the age of 20 she reported from Sudan, Egypt & the Middle East. Reporting from Palestine was written from the front line of the conflict between Jews & Arabs, Zionists & non-Zionists & Jews & the British Mandate Government. For authors completing their first or second books, either full-length texts or collections of stories, creative nonfiction essays or memoir pieces. This small workshop includes intense editing and reading feedback, tips on contacting publishers and agents, and close personal attention to the work in progress that is nearing its final stages of completion. Numerous authors who have been in this workshop now have agents, books, book contracts, have won awards and are working on their second and third book. This is not for someone just starting a book, but rather for authors who are in the middle or have completed a draft and are looking to rework sections, get past a stuck spot, and/or improve some aspect of the book (for example dialogue, character development, plot development, ending or starting sections, fluidity of the writing, etc). Committing to this workshop means your work will be read closely by the instructor and your peers, but this also demands that you read attentively the work of fellow participants. Open to all genres. Each participant has 10pages double spaced (2800words) max read per week, and receives both written and oral comments on that work each week. 170euros. Questions or to sign up, contact instructor Jennifer K Dick at fragment78@gmail.com

19 – 25 sept. (6 Nights/7 Days): NARRATIVE workshop: Getting It Down, Getting It Right, Getting The Story with Bruce Bauman. As a writer there can be nothing scarier or more filled with possibility than blank pieces of paper, except a manuscript page with a jumble of ideas that need to be transformed into a cohesive, seamless story. The workshop is aimed toward tackling these problems. Morning group sessions with exercises, free-writing, lectures & short readings directed at solving these problems, plus afternoons with one on one conferences to discuss student manuscript pages. Open to writers of fiction & non-fiction. It is my belief that every writer possesses his or her own creative DNA--the unique amalgam of experience, perception & voice, which no one can utilize but you. It is my goal to help you discover & refine your own personal paint box of tools, talents & concerns, preparing you to write stories that will engage both you as a writer, & your reader. BIO: Bruce Bauman , a professor in the CalArts MFA writing program since 2002 has taught courses in the novel, short story, narrative & popular criticism. He is the author of the novel & The Word Was. His work has appeared in Salon, BOMB, Bookforum, The LA Weekly, etc. Senior editor of Black Clock magazine, Bruce won the City Los of Angeles Grant in literature for 2008-'09. Workshop COST: $1895.00 ( tuition, lodging, some meals, excursions) Register at : INFO: franceworkshops@vcca.com A work-study scholarship is available.

20 Sept: Saturday, 11h-14h. GENERATIVE WRITING with Jennifer K Dick. A lunchtime workshop to help get the juices flowing, or push you to think out of the box you have been in. Open to all genres, the workshop will include exercises, sample texts, story and prose poem starters as well as a discussion on process. This 3 hour session, max 8 students, is a fun, exciting way to get yourself either writing for the first time, into your next book, or back into writing if you have been stuck. It can also provide new perspectives, help break habits, give you some tools for using language differently, or aid you to get closer to character or even the language that is locked within you. Each student will leave with at least one, and perhaps numerous, finished short pieces, as well as numerous starts to build on later at home. Break the ice, start the rentree right with a little generation of text, alongside dialogue with other writers about their work, reflections and process! Cost: 30euros. Contact & Instructor: Jennifer K Dick at fragment78@gmail.com to sign up or for questions.

SUBMIT & READ: Lauren Elkin announces the launch of Hitotoki Paris! Hitotoki is an online literary project collecting stories of singular experiences tied to specific locations in cities around the world. "Hito-wha?" I know, weird name. The word itself is a Japanese noun comprised of two components: hito or "one" & toki or "time," & is often translated as "a moment." We first launched last year in Tokyo (thus the name), & have since spread to New York, London, Shanghai, & Sofia, with several others in the works. We're accepting submissions of stories, photos, & illustrations on an ongoing basis. So what are you waiting for? Send us something! We'd also like to launch a French version of the site, & so are looking for a French editor. Contact me if you're interested. Come check us out, & spread the word, or submit! Lauren Elkin, Hitotoki Paris Editor http://hitotoki.org/paris/
