*8 April 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. An Evening with Simon Pettet – “Parallel Poetry” with Jennifer K Dick & WICE: Jennifer will interview Simon in this public forum about his work, his life & travels, perspectives, reflections, etc as part of Wice’s Writers on Writing evening: "Like Beethoven's Bagatelles", John Ashbery has written, Simon Pettet's short poems have a great deal to say, & their seeming modest dimensions help rather than hinder his saying it". A moderated open discussion between the writer & the attendees will follow. BIO: Simon Pettet is an internationally-renowned English-born poet, long-time resident of New York's Lower East Side. His most-recently published book of poems is the much acclaimed More Winnowed Fragments (Talisman, 2006). His Selected Poems is also still in print & available from the same publisher. Hearth, a new book of poems will be available in the Fall. He is also the author of two classic collaborations with photographer-filmmaker, Rudy Burckhardt, Conversations About Everything & Talking Pictures, & edited the Art Writings of the Pulitzer-prize-winning "New York School" poet, James Schuyler. The Paris-based literary journal UPSTAIRS AT DUROC invites you to a reading of new work by five authors: Sandy Florian, Choman Hardi, Christine Herzer, Chim Nwabueze & Simon Pettet. Bios: *Simon Pettet's the author of More Winnowed Fragments (Talisman, 2006), Selected Poems (Talisman, 1995), the collaborations Conversations About Everything & Talking Pictures with filmmaker Rudy Burckhardt. He edited Art Writings of Pulitzer-prize-winning "NY School" poet James Schuyler. Hearth, a book of poems, is forthcoming in 2008. He will be having a public interview session with Jennifer K Dick at WICE on 8 April & will give a workshop/special film session also at WICE this week.*Sandy Florian earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Brown University in 2003, where she was recipient of the Francis Mason Harris Award for the best manuscript by a woman. She is the author of Telescope (Action Books 2006), 32 Pedals & 47 Stops (Tarpaulin Sky Press 2007) & The Tree of No (forthcoming with Action Books 2008). Her work appears in over 40 national & international journals. She lives in Paris, where she teaches at WICE & the American University. *Choman Hardi was born in Iraqi Kurdistan. After her family fled to Iran in 1988, she came to England as a refugee in 1993 where she was educated at Queen's College Oxford & elsewhere. She has published two collections of poetry in Kurdish. Her highly acclaimed collection in English, Life for us, was published by Bloodaxe in 2004. *Poet & visual artist Christine Herzer is working on her MFA in poetry at Bennington College, Vermont. She has studied with Michael Burkard & Timothy Liu. She is currently in Paris to work on an artist book. *Chim Nwabueze, New York poet & composer currently living in France, is the author of Experiments & Drafts (USU 1998) & Convergences (USU 2004). He has also done numerous recordings of experimental music around the musical saw (sonorous blade) of which he is a rare specialist: Improvisations for saw & piano harp (with Sylvie Menta, 1999), Working with ladders (with Kenta Nagai, fretless guitar, 1999) & many more. Lydia has translated a number of avant-garde French novels, memoirs, & volumes of literary criticism, including works by Maurice Blanchot, Pierre Jean Jouve, Michel Butor, Michel Leiris, & most recently Swann's Way by Proust, which received the French-American Foundation's Annual Translation Prize. Davis was named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts & Letters by the French government for her fiction & translation, & is the recipient of the Whiting Writer's Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lannan Literary Award, & a John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. Byrne, Director of Waterford Institute of Technology, will give a short reading of his translation from Irish of The Midnight Court at the vernissage Con Quigley, director of Horwath Bastow Charleton (Limerick), will present the CCI with a series of engravings. Pauline Bewick's art breathes freedom & movement. She herself is a free spirit & her open philosophy has its roots in an unconventional childhood which was spent travelling around England & Ireland, living in houseboats & caravans. Following a prolific career from childhood onwards, her vivid paintings are featured in galleries & collections worldwide. Call for PARIS submissions: A new literary magazine, to be based in Paris, seeks short prose, poetry & poetic prose submissions. Guidelines: 1) Send something that is emotive, engaging & intelligent. That uses the music of language for a definite objective. 2) Send work that touches on depth of human feeling, relationships, moments lived… with insight & sensitivity.
